The shard requirements for leveling all crafts to 50 is stupid high - somewhere like 9000 fire shards alone, though not quite as bad for the others. Unless you want to waste all your hard earned gil buying off the marketplace, you're going to have to gather them. Leves will not provide anywhere near what you will need.

As you'll be aware, miners and botanists have wards which increase the yield of shards by 2 at the cost of 400cp, so you'll be able to gather 3 per swing at one node every 5 or so minutes. In this case, it'll be prudent to use this skill whenever it's available on the +1 gathering attempt nodes.

What you may not be aware of, is the level 30 shard nodes (the ones with crystals and pigments too) also have one node in the cluster which grants +1 yield to every swing. Not only does this mean you will gain 4 extra shards per 4-node circuit, but also if you use your ward, you will gain +1+2 at that node. Over the 4 swings under these conditions, you will walk away with a whopping 16 shards from that single node.

So to sum things up. If you need to farm some shards, ALWAYS go to the level 30 clusters.

Not always.

Distance between nodes is a massive factor too. Theres one low level spot where you can mine earth shards, and they are quite literally right next to each other, all four of them. Without using any kind of ward ability, I can mine far more per hour than, say, at another spot where the nodes are further apart and I use a ward ability.

There are a few similar locations across the lands, but admittedly not many.

The +1 yield node more than makes up for the extra distance if you need to farm shards for, say, 5 hours. 4 extra shards every four nodes is like farming off a 5 node cluster.

Again, distance will prove a factor, as will any surrounding enemies that force you to stealth. Maybe once you're high enough not to need stealth, but I would prioritise distance over bonuses. Not only do you gather quicker, each successful strike restores GP, meaning that you can activate wards sooner as well as maintaining a high AND fast return.

Stealth isnt usually a problem. One tactic I used when leveling up my gatherers was to pop a stealth literally at the last minute and turn it off as early as you can once you move past the enemy. Usually you only need to be stealthed for about 2 or 3 seconds.

Once again, I stress, if you are mining shards for a number of hours, I don't care if there's distance, the extra shards you will gather will compensate for this and then some. 3 or 4 extra shards per circuit, multiplied by potentially 200 or 300. That's nearly 1000 extra shards. In the real world that would take a couple of hours to gather the difference. It works.

If you arent using your ward on the right node, you're doing it all wrong. Let's not forget that the level 30 clusters provide those 4 extra shards without using any extra abilities, so that's that for that particular side of the discussion. So when your GP is recharging, you're still getting extra shards. It's a no-brainer!

Anyway's see for yourself. Try gathering fire shards outside ul'dah for 60 mins exactly and note how many you get. Then do the same on wellwick road for 60 mins. Compare the two. I challenge anyone to say that getting shards at ul'dah is quicker.
