Here's the deal:

I don't know jack shit about this game, and I have zero desire to read through wikis and shit to find the info I seek. Blokeh and company, this is where I turn to you.

1.) Do you allocate stats when leveling, or is it just some blanket even thing?
2.) Jobs and Classes. How do they work?: shortversionpls
3.) Probably answered by 1 & 2: If I wanted to make a specific build for some sort of super alchemist, can I? Or is everyone's skills essentially the same based on level?

These 3 questions will determine whether I get the game

1. you get the occasional stat point. kind of worthless though as each class has a primary stat and every stat point you get goes to that class
2. any race can be any class in the game. you can have one character max every class but obviously can only choose one at a time. switching classes is really simple. once you have a lvl 30 of one class and 15 of another you can have a job. each job requires a different level 30 and 15 combination. if you have every class at level 30 you can be any job. again one at a time
3.based on level and gear. there are a few skills from each class that can be used regardless of what class you currently are. so once you level up a few classes you can main once class and use a skill or two from the other classes. not much customization at this point though.

Shorter version...

1. Blanket, standard increase asdociated with class (magic users get more magic stat increases, fighters get physical increases), but from lvl10 onwards you get points you can allocate as you choose. Stats are unique to your class, change class and your stats change to reflect.

2. Choose any class you like. You have your battle classes (gladiator, mages, fisty fighters, etc) and your trade classes (alchemist, chef, fisherman, etc) and your field classes (miner, blacksmith, etc). As Fanboy said, combine battle classes to get "jobs". Gladiator + Conjurer = Paladin. Conjurer + Arcanist = White Mage. Etc.

3. As Fanboy says, you can cross link skills. My new Arcanist has the Protect spell from my Conjurer.

Also, just to add, if you're looking to be a tradesman, each trade feeds off each other. Blacksmiths create weapons, but will sometimes need wood that only a Botanist can get, or jewels only a Goldsmith can refine. Very laborious, but massively rewarding when you start srlling them to other players on the markets...

I see. Not quite the way I'd typically like my MMO, but quite total ass either. Worth looking into methinks.

Played an MMO once where you allocated all your stats, and that greatly influenced how good you were at your job in the game. By making some really specialized builds, you could be insane at certain things.

I made an Alchemist that couldn't fight for shit, and had a somewhat low success rate, but the potions I created were more effective than anyone else's in the game, so I was able to sell them at a super premium.

One more question: Servers. I'm mainly gonna play with my friend from Germany and maybe occasionally you ass faces. How's the lag if I'm not on a server specially for murricans?

Let me explain some things that I think you're looking to hear.

Your stats are automatically allocated as you level up, however as explained twice previously, you earn bonus points at certain llevels which you can allocate yourself. For example, as a paladin, which sppecialises in defense as well as healing abilities, you can choose to to focus on one more than the other. Myself as a Black Mage, my points go into intelligence which increases the potency of my offensive spells.

Choosing your armour also changes your stats, as well as giving you defense points. Choosing which sets to wear can greatly change your skills. Said armour is also slotted at higher levels, meaning you can modify it with loads of different bonuses.

There are passive jobs you can get too, these are trades, basically. Like Blacksmith and shit. I'm an alchemist, I brew potions and use them in battle. They can increase my stats temporarily so I unload a storm of pain upon my foes (fuck you I'll be dramatic if i please). So yeah, you could brew potions and focus on that, which would allow you to increase your strength that way. There are also three passive gathering abilities, giving you materials used for the trade skills.

However that's not a choice of one or the other. That's a choice of which you do first. You don't sacrifice your standard combat abilities in turn for being a legendary blacksmith who makes unbreakable armour. All of it can be done, seperate or together, at your own pace. It's open.

I know you didn't want a big answer but the information you were asking didn't really fit into a small sentence.

Also, you could make an Alchemist who made the best potions in all of Eorzea, but the same character could be the Tankiest Tanking Tank who ever Tanked.

All you do is swap your sword for your pestle and mortar and bam, you change class.

Summoner is totally the way forward.

As for me? I haaaaaated Axeclass when I first took it on to get Dragoon.. but shit me, playing Ian Malcolm and dictating chaos theory is the shizznit. Kind of want Warrior class just to transcend the boarders of Tank and DPS*

*I believe DPS actually stands for double-penetrating-service.

You don't need to take that spell. Protect hell fuckin' yeah tho. I took cure as well at first but then physick did the same amount of regen so I abandoned it. Maybe take stone to cast heavy on 'em.

Its like having Conjurer in cleric stance - healing is pretty good but damage output is way better.

Almost seems like its worth dicking aboutin duties in low level gear and selling any loot you have no use for.
