Never before in my life have I ever had this happen to me.

I love RPGs, with a passion.
More playtime to the pound that any other game going. More replay value than chronic masturbation.

And Square-Enix are the undisputed masters. On the side of volume, SEL put out more higher rated RPGs than any other company produces RPGs of any review rating.

Yet, Disgaea 3 has gone back to Lovefilm after just 3 hours.

Don't take this as a review, as I haven't played enough of it to put my opinion across properly. I didn't last that long.

Disgaea 3 - Absence of Justice is arguably one of the worst RPGs I've seen for a while, when compared to its timeframed peers.
Imagine, if you will... Final Fantasy Tactics.

With bad guys that are good guys, good guys that are bad guys, and demons who behave themselves are seen as the ultimate evil.

And that's basically it.

Oh, you get some levels where you have ground area effects, that you can change, and destroy for massive damage. Leaves basically anything stood on the previously effecting floor with 1hp.
But most of the puzzles you find with the cubes are that damn hard to set up, that it's actually quicker, and safer, to kill the enemies by the traditional, and much loved method of nailbat (Fuck yo' materia slots) to the skull. Repeatedly.

Outside of battle, there's very little story to follow. The No 1 Honour Student is the principle's son, and wants to acquire the powers of a hero to overthrow him. He finds a hero (conveniently in the school, which is never really explained up to where I got to), steals his powers in about 3 seconds of dialogue, and proceeds to get less evil as it goes.

The main antagonist is a fucking annoying No 1 Delinquent. Bubblegum hair, annoying voice... Think Deedee from Dexter's Lab, give her wings, horns, and pink hair, and you're basically on it. Oh, and ninja sidekicks.

It's nice to see someone attempt to remake FFT under another name, but I'd much prefer that they just remastered FFT for the PS3. Fuck, do what they've done with FF7-9, and just flat out bang them on the PSN.

Fuck you SEL, I was expecting something fluffy, but not downright shit.

Next game please, Lovefilm. Although, don't be in any great rush to send Twilight's choice to me. Kingdom Hearts is probably better off waiting..

I was prepared to ignore your opinion up until Deedee. That actually gave me pause. Perhaps I won't rent this game, after all.

Rent it if you want something to waste time on, but there's far, far better turn based RPGs out there. Christ, if you want it, get a copy of FFT and slam it in your PS3. It'll be better, and you'll enjoy it more than this fluffy dross.

Yeah, I have it in my Gamefly Queue, but I only have a couple weeks left in my subscription period, so I'm gonna bump that further down.

you didnt play through it all. thats not how you review a game. if youd finish it youd know that rasberyl isnt the villian its instead
geoffery the butler/the great hero. he wanted to make mao the ultimate overlord so he could kill mao
and it gets really dark near the end

it just might not have been your game, but please dont bash a game until youve beaten at least the main story. its also my fav disgaea game. but at least you didnt bash it because it had sprite graphics(unlike ign who said it was bad FOR THAT ONLY PREMISE!!!)

I got as far in to it that I could tolerate, and even at the very early stages, it was completely clear that there was some ulterior motive with the butler.

And I specifically said it wasn't a review. 3 hours isn't long enough to understand enough of a game to review it.
And about it not being my kind of game? I love RPGs, in pretty much all guises (except for action 3rd/1st persion FPSRPGRTSWTFBBQs that tack on the elements to try to create cross-appeal). My challenge hasn't been running very long, but I've already played games that I probably would have never bought at all. Some of them I absolutely adored (and now own so I can play them later, like Prince of Persia).

And the major problem with waiting until the end of a main story to vindicate your opinion on an RPG? They're designed to be (in most cases) 20/30+ hours. Even then, you're not making an opinion on the game itself, more on the narrative that going through the game itself. RPGs are designed in a way that core mechanics are established within a few hours, so the narrative can come though, without having extra tutorials getting in the way of it. So as far as the key mechanics go, I'd seen possibly most of how the game plays.

And a quick point about Rasberyl. She's the definitive antagonist. Not villain. Antagonist.
Her struggle in being Number 1 Delinquent is in direct opposition to Mao's position as Head Student.

As much as I'd love to instantly dismiss someone's opinion about a game if they didn't know absolutely everything about that game, it's not how it happens. Games, and especially rental games, have a few hours to hook someone into the rest of the game, and despite how much I love playing RPGs, Disgaea 3 just didn't appeal to me in the way that RPGs usually do. Add in the strange fight mechanics with altitude, puzzle squares, etc, and it just didn't seem like a game that I'd be able to tolerate enough to find a proper stance for a review.

Oi, this was in PS3 chat, because it ain't a review :shoot:

Yeah, but I didn't put it in the review part, because it wasn't a review, more me saying why I couldn't review it, because I hated it :P

Plus, it wasn't one from my challenge, so nyeh :P
