By now we all know what Wii Play is, and most of us actually already have it. But what about those who don't, or who are in two minds? Well, that's what I'm here for.

First off, what we all know. You pay your £40/$50 and you get not only a disc filled with games, but a free Wiimote. Not bad, considering Wiimotes cost £35/$39 anyways. But what do you get for the extra fiver/$10? And is it worth the extra cost?

Well, in a word, yes. But it's not exactly that clear cut. Wii Play has a total of 7 games (with 2 more unlockable) all of which can be played with just the Wiimote - which when you think about it is kinda clever. New Wii owners won't be too happy about shelling out a ton of cash for an extra controller so why not throw in a whole load of 2 player games in with it? How can you lose? Well, the games could be duff for a start....

Let's start with each game in order.

Shooting range
First off, what at first appears to be Duck Hunt Wii turns out to be simply a case of shooting static targets and avoiding shooting pictures of your face. Later you shoot UFOs while they try to abduct your Miis, which is kinda funny, but soon gets boring.

Find mii
There's a crowd of Miis. Find either your Mii or a group of identical Miis in different surroundings. And that's it.

Table tennis
Play a game of table tennis using disembodied hands. If you miss, game over. If you reach 100 returns, it's game over. WTF?

Pose mii
Using the Wiimote, twist and turn your Mii to fit into different poses that appear in bubbles to pop them. And... that's it.

Laser hockey
Ah, now we have a decent game. Imagine neon Air Hockey and you'll have an idea of what this is like. The strange thing is that it's really rather addictive, and 2 player games can quickly turn into heated battles where lives are on the line.

Billiards
What's this? A nigh-on lifelike recreation of American style pool, with authentic cueing action? Can it be? Well, yes. And it's great! Spin, bounce, rollback, even jumps. It's all here, and it's great.

Fishing
Oh dear. Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, you find it full of paper fish. Simply a case of "catch the required fishes is a time limit". Uninspired and dull.

Charge!
The first unlockable game is the one I lovingly refer to as "Cow racing". Sat atop your cow, you charge around a race track set on a farm, knocking over scarecrows and jumping fences. You control your cow by holding the Wiimote sideways and steer by tilting left and right, speed up by tilting forward, and jump by yanking the Wiimote upwards. Great stuff, and again, 2 player makes all the difference.

Tanks!
The second unlockable game uses the Wiimote AND nunchuk. The aim of this game is to blow up the enemy tanks from an above perspective. The Wiimote aims and fires your weapons, and the nunchuk stick is used to move your tank. However, just like most of the other games, it's not that good.

So what else can be said of Wii Play? Well, it's apparent that Nintendo wanted this to be the dessert to Wii Sports' main course, but it ended up being nothing more than a crusty bread bun on a side dish. Sure, it looks pretty, and there's a LOT of catchy tunes in there, but the games themselves - the most important things - let it down a lot.

It wouldn't be too bad if there were other modes of play, but other than a "go back and earn medals" replay option, there's nothing else here!

So is it worth the buy? Well, the Wiimote is worth the money, and the billiards game in itself is worth the extra money, so yes. It's also another good example of just how flexible and reactive the Wiimote control method really is, and it looks slicker than the Exxon Valdez incident. There's also a great deal of Mii usage thrown in there too, and not as a last minute effort either - each game uses your Miis (try clicking on the limbs of the Mii on the menu screen).

In summation, it's a well polished, great looking, nice sounding, but overall dull bundle of games that won't hook you half as much as Wii Sports did.
