The animated Superman series that ran in the '90s was drawn from the comics and is "factually" correct, as far as canon goes, it was established there that Superman couldn't even beat the Flash in a race, and to my knowledge, the Flash can't time travel, either, so

In the movie, Superman slowed the earth down, and THEN reversed the earth. This would have the effect of being in a car that slows down before hitting the reverse gear and backing up.
