OK SO HERE'S A THREAD I MADE BECAUSE I'D LIKE TO DISCUSS THIS FURTHER AND ALSO OFF-TOPIC IS BAD SO I MADE ONE OK???

As a first impression, I guess I can see where that joke would MAYBE make someone ":/", but really, I don't find jokes about skin-color, as long as they're not offensive, to be an issue.

See, I don't think jokes on skin-color are racist by default. Some are, most perhaps, but Wiktionary defines racism as the following:
1. The belief that each race has distinct and intrinsic attributes.
2. The belief that one race is superior to all others.
3. Prejudice or discrimination based upon race.

None of which was shown in JZ's joke, unless you really, really overthink it like Smokey did(chip as a slur? lolwut, how does even). JZ's joke did not indicate that any race was superior or inferior to another, nor did it show any prejudice whatsoever. It was a good-natured pun with no signs of discrimination based on skin-color, it was merely based in the fact that their skin WAS brown, and also drew upon the common slang, "chocolate," for a person that has said brown skin.

Honestly, as someone who absolutely does NOT get worked up over religion or anything like that, I find Blokey's occasional jabs at religions to be more offensive than such a joke, because those jabs show the religions in a negative light, whereas the aforementioned joke simply relied on a fact(that the pictured peoples' skin was brown).

This is not to say that Blokey should quit the jabs. Not to say that Catholic = pedo jokes should be removed from YRYR. Not to say that pokes at Allah should be strictly smote from this board. Just that people all need to chillax about stuff. If someone really found that joke offensive, they were looking for a reason to get offended, much like anyone who would get mad at a Jesus = zombie joke. If that is the case, we(I) really didn't want them around right away anyway, people who get pissed at the drop of a hat are, while hilarious, annoying as hell.

OKAY SO I'M RAMBLING LIKE A LITTLE BITCH AT THIS POINT. TL;DR I DO NOT THINK THAT JOKES BASED ON SKIN-COLOR ARE RACIST UNLESS THEY SHOW DISCRIMINATION AND EVEN IF A JOKE IS JUST A LITTLE RACIST WHO CARES CAUSE HATERS GONNA HATE ONE WAY OR THE OTHER.

TL;DR WAS TL;DR: AS LONG AS WE AIN'T FLINGING AROUND THE N-WORD IN A HATEFUL WAY FOR ABSOLUTELY NO REASON I THINK WE COO'

Way I see it, religion is a choice, so its fair game.

You can't choose your colour.

Christians can be people of all colours, so its more a jab at the faith, the belief system, and the paedophiles that run it.

But when you make a joke at the expense of their skin colour, thats a direct jab at them.

I make the occasional joke about Twilight's origins to him directly, but under the safe assumption he can make any comment about my bad teeth or addiction to tea and scones and we're good.

But I would never make a comment about the colour of his skin. Thats just wrong.

Buuuuuuuut, thats just me.

So offending people is A-OK if it's mocking them for what they believe in, and not making a play on words about how they look in a neutral light?

No. I don't mock people for what they believe in.

I mock what they believe in.

Not the people who believe it.

I mock Catholicism, Christianity, Islam, Judaism.

I don't mock people.

Difference.

Terra, man, it was borderline. I made a decision and stuck by it. I felt it was the right decision to make.

'Round my area, there's a big Asian (Pakistani, Bangali, Indian) population. They're brown. I've known a few that have been referred to as "chocolate" of some kinda. Went to school with them where all the jokes came out.

So when you say it's not a slur, I feel that's subject to the person, as in this area it would be.

I don't want such a big thing to come out of this, I just thought it better that the comment was removed. It didn't seem to add anything to the conversation, and I've explained why.

It's certainly nothing person as I've said before.

As for any comments which you've felt could be almost offensive (like religion), remember we do have a system for flagging these kind of posts. Regardless of who posts them, be it myself, Blokey or Pie, or even anyone else, they'll looked out without prejudice and the feedback is welcome so long as it's constructive.

Ah, so, offending people is A-OK if you mock not them, but what they represent?

So we can make fun of the concept of brown skin, but not black people?

I'm really not trying to troll or be a brat here, but it seems that if you're gonna clamp down with an iron fist on something that may offend someone for one reason, why is it legit to not only allow things that may offend for other reasons, but partake in them yourself?

That picture that got posted in YRYR by Dragonheat(not trying to namedrop, but you do post a lot of these, bro) a while back, of something behind the pope making it look like he had devil-horns, didn't get admonished in the least. That would easily offend many, many more people than an actual racist joke, cause, while most people understand that racist jokes are typically in good fun, most people have their panties in a knot at all times about religion.

Again, I'm not trying to be a little bitch, but I'm almost getting "I do this myself so it's okay even though it's bad" vibes here.

Ax: I'm not trying to bag on your decision at all here, dawg. I respect that you stand by it, and I'm not even saying it was a poor decision, I understand WHY you did it, I just don't agree that you did, for reasons explained above.

Yes, there's a report feature, but why smite down things that may not even be racist on sight, but wait for people to shift into hissybitch mode to remove religious slurs? That's discriminatory, which can't even be said of the post that got deleted(IMO)!

I'm also not trying to make a big thing of this, I'm just trying to help put things in perspective, to possibly make the site itself better and smoother-running. And also because I'm an attention whore who loves having my opinion known, and considers arguing a sport.

Personally, I'm all for off-color humor. I've rost hard at some of the religion jokes. Hell, I've posted a couple. If it's just in the name of humor (and I mean ONLY in the name of humor), I don't see the harm.

Now, regarding JZ's post, he may not have meant anything negative by it. However, it WAS unnecessary. Not only did it violate thread rules, but it could be construed as racist. If it had been a funny pic that was kinda dodgy, I don't think anyone would have minded 'cause the point would have been to incite humor, not hatred. It wasn't, though, so I think Ax did the right thing.

*sigh*

Okay, here it is again.

You can choose to be Christian.
You can choose to be Catholic.
You can choose to be Jewish.
You can choose to be a Muslim.

Whats that? You can't choose, cos you were raised that way?

Bullshit. Religion is a choice. You either believe in it or you don't. Many people reject their faiths all the time. To some people, religion is like a change of clothing, to be changed whenever they feel like it.

Sure, some stick with it, and power to them.

So if you're a Catholic and someone takes a picture of the Pope and shoops him fucking a choirboy, you might be offended. This is, after all, a photo of your most revered and holiest person living. Doesn't change the fact that boyrape is rife in Catholicism, and this picture is simply making that statement. But anyways, you might be offended. But then again, you might wake up and think "Y'know what, this shit is wrong. Bumming kids is a bad thing and should not be tolerated. Fuck it, Imma become a Taoist, who are basically like those future guys from Bill And Ted who simply want to "be excellent to each other". Yeah, thats what I wanna do!" and bam, religion changed.

Now lets take someone who has brown skin.

They were born that way. Can't be changed. Unless you're a kiddy fiddling popstar with a dodgy nose. They're brown for life, and no matter how hard they wish themself white, it ain't gonna happen.

Now someone takes a picture of a brown skinned person and doctors it in some way to make it seem like the butt of this joke is derived from the colour of their skin. Maybe its a black man robbing watermelons from KFC. Maybe its a black man stealing a BMW. The brown skinned man is gonna be offended - racial stereotypes making them look bad. Sure, this shit happens, but doesn't make it right.

But what can this brown skinned man do? Can he change the colour of his skin? No. He's immediately labelled with the same racial stereotyping that plagues so much of this world, and thats it. The "N" word comes out to play and, well, we done got ourselves an old fashioned lynching, son!

Mocking an ideal, an image, a story, is not mocking a person.

There is a vast difference here, but there are some people who simply aren't willing to see this.

The thing is, if something gets reported, it won't get nuked. It will get reviewed, usually by one of the mods, and if they think it needs further review, then its made for all of the mods to see.

If its blatantly obviously rulebreaking, it goes. If its borderline, it gets reviewed. Never wanted to get heavy handed, but it was removed for the right reasons.

To be honest, if Ax hadn't got there first, I would have removed it myself.

I got the religious choice thing the first time, I just meant that many people consider it much more important than the color of their skin. D:

I'll toss you an example in the form of, surprise, JZ. I was mentioning a plot of something or another to him, and said something like "And thus, making people believe that the Pope is the Antichrist."

He interjects, clearly having not been paying attention until that point, and goes "Hey, what the fuck? Did you just call the Pope the Antichrist? ...The fuck is that about, man? Not cool."

This being the kid who laughs at...pretty much everything short of gore(and apparently, religion).

I dunno. I guess maybe I'm just trying to nitpick or something. Sorry if I offended you, Ax, or you, Blokey(that seems so weird being typed, since I can't really gesture to you while saying it).

I agree with Terra. Read the definition of racism. Making a statement about color does not qualify.

Fanboy - considering you've reported more posts than all of the other members combined here, I honestly don't think this thread is the right one for you... no offence, but y'know, he who is without sin and all that shit...

Terra - I totally see your point, I do. But to me, a person's religion is of no more importance than my Star Wars or Final Fantasy addiction, or Cassy's Twilight addiction, or most of y'all's addiction to Harry fucking Potter... these things get mocked all the time by people of differing opinions, yet its always the subject matter that is the butt of the joke, not the people who adore them. I could say "I think Persona is a big bag of shit", and a few people would be all "NO U LOLOL" and that would be it.

But what would happen I said "Anyone who likes Persona is a fucking retard and should have a traffic accident?" There'd be so many reports that I'd have to resign.

You can mock religion without mocking the religious.

You can't mock colour without mocking the coloured.
