Spinoffs not allowed, sir.

Main series or GTFO.

Also, Crystal Chronicles on GC was actually kinda mint. Wonder why it got so much hate?

Red/Blue - 6 Pokemon Team, 8 gyms, all items held in one bag, evil team, legendary pokemon just kind of exist, no real relevance to plot, dungeon avaliable after beating elite four, rock paper scissors battle formula, your rival is a twat.

Gold/Silver - 6 Pokemon Team, 16 gyms (had two countries/continents whatever you want to call them), compartments for the bag, introduces: day/night cycle, breeding and pokemon genders, updated battle screen, ability to hold items, happiness levels of pokemon, added the pokegear (allowed for trainers you've previously battled to ring you and challenge you again, listen to the radio), pokeball/apricon crafting, introduces shiny pokemon, addition of dual type pokemon, addition of two new types, weather system, addition of berries. Rival is, still a twat.

Ruby/Sapphire - change in origin story, you actually have a Dad now, rival is friendly, and you kind of had a third rival (if I recall correctly) evil team, this time they actually threaten the world and you save it. introduced: new weather type, pokemon contests which served as an interesting way to spend time outside of battle, could raise pokemon to be good in contests as opposed to battle. added the double battle system, two vs two pokemon battles, allows for new strategies, especially in competitive play (I'm sure Heru can expand upon this, I just play pokemon because of nostalgia really), pokemon now have special abilities that affect stats and stuff (I'm a bit rusty on this part), ability to mix records with other players, which meant that TVs in the nation would occasionally report on activities they've performed, and their 'secret base' would appear in your world, meaning you could battle their squad (at the time of mixing records) at pretty much any time. secret base building mechanic added, running shoes obtained early in the game, which means you don't have to walk extremely slowly for ages before you get the bike, added pokeblocks Weirdly the day/night system has completely disappeared.

Diamond/Pearl - different introduction, barely important though, two rivals again, still an evil team, similar idea regarding the legendary pokemon destroying world, you save it. changed battle systems, attacks now assigned physical or special type depending on how it's performed, as opposed to it's type. changed the contest system to make use of the touch screen, changed pokeblocks to poffin, makes use of the nintendo wi-fi connection, taking the large focus of battling your friends to the next level, voice chat is made use of, there's a multiplayer mode in the form of the Sinnoh Underground (fully explained here, seeing as it's surprisingly indepth.) and a some other stuff that I can't even remember.

Disclaimer: I have no idea when the Effort Value system (that Heru mentioned) was introduced, showing how optional and hardcore that system is.

the pokemon games don't strive to be different, they take the previous formula and improve, so yeah, say that they haven't changed, because in theory they haven't, it's still the same, GET THE POKEMON, SAVE THE WORLD, BE THE BEST formula, but the things to do on that journey have changed.

LEGO METAPHOR:
Final Fantasy is like a lego city, each game represents a building, something different.
Pokemon is like a giant lego tower, you just keep building on top of what you've already got.

but when it comes down to it, they're both RPGs.

I'll take my nerd badge and wear it proudly.

GSC had Stat Experiences, which were similar to Effort Values, but Effort Values are also a bit more complex and can largely change your Pokemon's stats in the long run. Effort Values were introduced in the RSE Generation. Really though, it is a very thorough process that can take a large amount of time to even perfect a single Pokemon, but you get a huge feeling of satisfaction when a single Pokemon you raised to perfection easily takes down an entire team of 6.

You guys may argue all you can about this matter, but in the end, I'm buying both Pokemon HeartGold and Final Fantasy 13 because I <3 my RPG's.

TBH.

Plus, Heru, when you want to start talking maths, I'll be over here, caressing my functional combat ratings, coefficients, spell ratings, defense formulae.

Yes, WoW is built on some fucking hardcore maths. None of this kiddy stuff that Pokemanz are based on. 8-)

Because my level 80 rogue and I know nothing about the math in WoW, right?

And Pokemon clearly has some kiddy stuff based on it. Here's the formula to catch a Pokemon:

So easy, a caveman could do it. Your WoW bias doesn't work here broseph.

Yea, Pokemon is extremely deep. Leave your bias at the door.

Why we talkin bout' WoW anyway? This is a Pokemans and Final Fantasy thread.

That's great Heru, do you use that formula to determine at what HP level you should throw your pokeball? Cause if not it doesn't even matter what the math is.

If the highest chance is a pokemon on 0 health, and the lowest their health can be before death is 1, then you throw it as close to 1hp as possible. And instantly, wall of math is rendered obsolete.
