except doesn't that kind of ruin the whole idea behind god being all knowing? cause you know, god wouldn't make mistakes and have to come out with a new book.

That's another thing I've wondered about. Did God make a "mistake," or decide to go one route for a while then switch to create these interesting debates or for some other purpose.

I'm more of a fan of the "God is a troll and did this all on purpose" theory, but whatever.

yes, I'm sure the whole thing was just to put doubt in people's minds.

Getting sarcastic in a debate is no way to approach things.

On that note: OH YEAH CAUSE YOU KNOW HOW GOD'S MIND WORKS, TOTALLY. YOU'RE ACTUALLY CHRIST, WAITING FOR YOUR SECOND COMING, RIGHT?

capslock is cruise control for hilarious.

Different sets of rules for different groups of people in a different age. For instance, back then, people didn't have the medical advances that we do now. That's why there's a section of the Pentateuch devoted to clean and unclean animals and other such health-related matters. We don't have to worry about eating pigs now because we've developed safe ways to prepare them. We are also a cleaner society, and don't have to worry nearly so much about disease; coincidentally, those unclean animals just so happened to carry many deadly diseases.

mod edit: offensive report received; assumed offensive section has been removed

show me the proof that AIDS started because of gay men. Please, I'm dying to see it. On that note, this debate just got completely ridiculous and I will no longer be a part of it.

Bam.

To be fair, I did misspeak. I should have said "first appear in the US". Even so, you cannot deny that HIV/AIDS is unusually prevalent in homosexual males.

I'm sorry, I didn't see anything in there that says AIDS was caused by 2 guys having sex. It's prevalent in homosexual males because back in the 70's and 80's a ton of them were given Hep B vaccines that were grown (for lack of a better word) in chimpanzees who were capable of carrying SIV. It's also prevalent in black people. Should we start blaming them for AIDS? Where in the bible does it say not to have sex with black people?

Going back to a point you made earlier about things in the bible not being relevant anymore due to advances in medicine and technology, when did you or anyone else get to decide what should and shouldn't be followed in the bible and what is and is no longer relevant? You either follow it or you don't. It's not a buffet line where you get to pick and choose the things you like. End of story.

It specifically says that gay men are especially susceptible to STDs, including AIDS.

Quit twisting my words. I never said that AIDS was CAUSED by gay men.

When Christ came along and said that the old rules about clean and unclean animals no longer apply. When Christ came along and said that "an eye for an eye" is wrong. Do you see where I'm going with this? You may not have noticed, but the word "Christians" has "Christ" in the name. He's just a WEE bit more important than Moses to us. Just sayin'.

No twisting of words. That's a blatant accusation.

frankly I'd rather not subscribe to the idea that we're all inbred.

This topic is about evolution and religion, not sex and monkeys and AIDS.

Well maybe a little sex in reference to evolution, but not in the terms of spreading lethal viruses.

:cop: Back on topic or I go on a cleaning spree

I clicked that link Smokey posted.

Says that the first recorded US cases were men.

Doesn't say they were gay.

Just men.

They did have PCP though.

Pneumocystis is commonly found in the lungs of healthy people, but being a source of opportunistic infection it can cause a lung infection in people with a weak immune system. Pneumocystis pneumonia is especially seen in people with cancer, HIV/AIDS and the use of medications that affect the immune system.

So PCP isn't just AIDS specific?

Wow.

That, kinda, I dunno, fucks this theory right in the ass, if you'll excuse the metaphor....

I later clarified that the first recorded cases of AIDS in the US were among gay men.

And PCP hits people with weak immune systems. With AIDS being unusually prevalent among gay men, that puts them right up in the top five groups most likely to get hit.

Remember, I am not saying nor have I ever said that gay men are to blame for AIDS.

You did say it first appeared in gay men, when that quite clearly isn't the case. It might have started being more prominent in gay men, but didn't start there.

But then you have the fact that, before it was called AIDS, it was called the 4H disease, as it was primarily found in Haitians, homosexuals, hemophiliacs and heroin users.

Also, you can't really blame gay men for its spread either, or should I say, hold them totally responsible. Many gay men kept their sexuality a secret for fear of the stigma it brought. So they kept hush, lest the general populace shunned them, and that resulted in many cases going undiagnosed until it was far too late.
