Can I just ask, while you're all tearing JZ a new asshole for making a comment you all think absurd (rather than doing the adult thing and ignoring it if you don't like it rather than making it a point to take a dig) what exactly happens to illegal immigrants in the US that require emergency medical treatment?

If they go to the hospital, the hospital is legally obligated to treat them, regardless of legal status.

The key word in your question is emergency, though.

Am I missing something here? How will illegals affect voting? They can't, can they?

Also, what if the treatment wasn't emergency? What then?

Not being funny, just seriously asking cos I only know what I read....

So I'm guessing you gotta be a citizen.... and I'm thinking that, cos Obama was on about a free healthcare system for all, that this is what he was getting at.... Obama is a democrat, right?

You know what? Fuck it. I'll admit, I have no idea about democrats and republicans and the differences between the two. What I do know is that a healthcare managed by insurance companies is a recipe for disaster. You cannot put a price on people's health or lives.

There isn't a hell of a lot of difference between Democrats and Republicans (not anymore, anyway).

Yes, you do have to be a citizen to vote.

The only conclusion I can draw from Joey's last post that makes any sort of sense is that legal Latin American immigrants (and probably legal immigrants of other nationalities, as well) will look unfavorably on legislation preventing illegals from getting healthcare. It's far-fetched (and slightly retarded), but there ya go. Oh, and American politicians with any brains at all (inb4oxymoron/contradictioninterms/etc), regardless of political orientation, will not allow a system where illegals get better care than legitimate citizens. Otherwise, they're committing political suicide and they're putting a target square in the middle of their face for anyone interested in becoming an amateur mugger.

Finally, if it's not a life-or-death emergency, private hospitals are not required to admit you. I'm not terribly certain how much more open public hospitals are in non-emergency situations, but I don't think they're a whole lot different in that regard.

For the record, I agree with Fanboy 100%. I'll take Canada's system and it's issues, over your broken System in the States any day.

Any HealthCare system that is not looking out for the people as priority #1 is a total failure.

good to see someone with kids saying single payer isn't that bad. Kinda gives me a little hope.

Well, I've had my fair share of family problems in terms of health. Including multiple surgeries, and diabetes.

The biggest issue we face in our HealthCare system right now is wait times, and while they can be bad, they are not generally ever for people who urgently need care. The problem here right now, is we're losing too many of our trained Doctors to the US, where they are able to make a lot more money.

This applies to the UK as well, I think.

I'd rather have to wait than not be able to afford health insurance at all.

I wonder where the good doctors will go if we start to fuck them over here... :hmm:

Probably into law, so they can sue the ever loving shit out of doctors.

It's not like Doctor's make bad money here. My guess is, if the US option was taken away things would better here. There isn't a huge difference overall, between living/working north or south of the border, which is why I think the appeal is there. I don't think the Doctor's would be as interested in travelling much further away just to collect a bigger paycheck. But, I could be wrong.

The healthcare reform bill in the States would be one of the best things any US president has done in recent memory. This is something that is needed IMO. But, that is, of course the opinion of an outsider. One however, that has seen the system can work.

So, doesn't look like this bill you're getting the US is quite what I had initially thought/hoped you guys would, but it's never-the-less a step in the right direction towards fixing your system.

It has potential.

This quote makes me laugh however:

Prof. Jost, Professor of Law, Washington & Lee University wrote:
This is far more revolutionary than anything I've seen in Canada in 20 years.

Maybe that's because Canada has had publicly funded health care since the mid 60's.
