Someone who likes NiN, please explain to me why you think they're good, then maybe I'll understand why there's so much internet spam about them.

Haven't heard any of their songs apart from Black Tears and Heaven Shall Burn did it better....
Wait you're talking about Nine Inch Nails?

Their earlier stuff was awesome, because it was one of the first times industrial music had successfully made it to the masses. Pretty Hate Machine, The Downward Spiral, both albums full of great songs and a sound that confused you by making you want to chill and dance at the same time.

Then they got shit.

Their early stuff was just good. And Trent did have a talent for making good music sound better with his remixes, then he just got up his own arse and, well, welcome to now.

Because Trent Reznor is an amazing musical master mind.

Saw them once whilst I went to a gig called Defenders of The Faith that featured Opeth, Arch Enemy, and some other band. NiN were on for about 20 minutes and I can say that not one person particularly enjoy any of their crap

Blokey has this down.

It's somewhat similar to a great author or philosopher who ends up going crazy, and their later work ends up being totally weird and stupid, yet every once in awhile that genius shows through, and you think "Wow, they really are good at this."

But then it goes back to just being crazy.

So, yes. I like NiN. Always have. I enjoy SOME of their newer stuff, but the majority of it ends up just being wrong. That said the "Ghosts" album/project, although being a terrible CD for listening would make a pretty good background soundtrack to a game/movie project.

I agree with Blokey, except for the fact that he didn't count The Fragile. That was an outstanding double album.

Beyond that, I like most of With Teeth (The Line Begins to Blur -> Beside You In Time -> Right Where It Belongs? Cmon), Year Zero was mostly great because of the concept and ARG, but there's a few gems on there too. YZ just gets kind of annoying because of the 2 minute long outros of unnecessary noise on every freaking song. Ghosts was an interesting experiment.

The Slip just was. I enjoy a couple songs though.

What makes NIN such a big deal to me? Shit like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-gTKV5hH9A
aka, their live show. Always over the top, except for the more minimal sets their doing on NINJA, but that's intentional.

The Fragile is one of the most amazing albums I have ever heard.

Ditto, my favorite.

Oh, and the reason the internet in general has such a stiffy for them is because they 'stick it to the man' by releasing their albums without an evil record label, and more recently letting people download 'em for free.
