You have the logic of a 10 year old.
In case you haven't noticed, Microsoft has been pretty clueless lately. They keep doing all kinds of random projects and fail to capture new markets (zune? bing? table thingy? silverlight?). Apple, on the other hand, knows exactly where it's going and where they want to go. They expand slowly but surely, using very specific strategies. Their whole organization is remarkably consistent. Speaking business strategy strictly, of course.
In all fairness to MS, Silverlight is actually still in it's infancy and is gathering quite a following in the development community. Milan, the surface computer, is more of a concept, and as far as I know, it's not even available to market, which makes it hard to say it's failed. Bing is too new and Google's internet stranglehold is too strong for any real progress to be seen there yet, and quite likely ever. And, Zune is actually a decent player, again however, Ipod is just too engrained in society now. MS was just too late to the party. That said, there are features of the Zune that I'd like Apple to adopt in future Ipod's. Won't likely happen, but if Zune ever becomes a legitimate competitor it'd only be a good thing.
The fact remains that Microsoft's flagship software, which is not Windows btw, is still going strong. Microsoft Office. On top of the MS is involved in countless other successful ventures. When you look at their portfolio, having Zune, Bing, and Milan as your question marks is really good, because they are solidly entrenched with 99% of their other business.
In regard to the OP, I think my feelings on Apple's marketing department are well documented in this community.
