Shin Megami Tensei is a game series developed by a small gaming company called Atlus back in 1992. the game was never released outside of japan due to the stuff in it that would make games back then like mortal kombat look like sesame street. there are currently 3 games in the main series and about 20-25 spinoffs, nearly all that do get released over here get high scoring reviews and numerous awards for storytelling and the like.

now youre probaly asking yourself "raiku, why is this in a debate section of a forum?". im about to tell you why. the game does not shy away fom religion, its practices and its controversey with many diffrent groups over the years. all 3 main games revolve around religion and im about to explain the plot of each one using wikipedia so i can bring about the "challenge":

Shin Megami Tensei 1: The story is set in Tokyo in the year 199X. Demons from the nether-realm of Hell have found their way back to Earth, and as such have upset the balance of power. A charismatic Japanese leader attempts a coup d'état using these demons as a potent military force, forcing America to intervene with its military. The player, as the hero, becomes involved when sent a Devil Summoning Program via email which allows him to converse with and recruit demons to fight for him, storing them as digital data on his computer.

In the aftermath of the ensuing destruction, the hero must decide what kind of world should be created on its ruins. Will he side with the angels and create a kingdom of absolute order that would last for a thousand years, or will he side with the demons and bring about an eternal anarchy, or will he choose neither, and destroy everyone who opposes him?

Shin Megami Tensei 2: At the end of Shin Megami Tensei, the protagonist decided to create a world where both Law and Chaos would exist equally, and people would have the freedom to choose and believe whatever they wished. Fifty years later, the world was plagued by disasters and over time, the air became unbreathable. Because of this, people flocked to an encapsulated city built by those who preach the Messian religion. That city was called Tokyo Millennium.

This game follows the story of Hawk, a battler in the Valhalla district of Tokyo Millennium. The citizens of Valhalla compete in a tournament in hopes of gaining citizenship in the Center district, which is out of the reach of demons.

Hawk fights in the tournament and wins. He gains citizenship in the Center district and has a personal meeting with the Bishop of the Messian religion. During the meeting, he is told that he is actually the Messiah, who will one day save mankind from the current bleak world and bring about a paradise called the "Thousand Year Kingdom".

Hawk, whose true name is revealed to be Aleph, is sent on missions from the Center to eradicate demons and prepare the world for the Thousand Year Kingdom. Yet while he travels across Tokyo Millennium, he witnesses first-hand the atrocities the Center inflicts on the people and must decide whether to follow his pre-determined destiny or fight against it in the hope of creating something better.

Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne/Lucifers Call: You are a boy who starts out by taking an innocent trip to the hospital to visit your sick teacher, Yuko Takao, with your friends Chiaki Tachibana and Isamu Nitta. On the way to the hospital and upon arrival, there is a strange feeling in the air accompanied with even stranger happenings, and soon you find yourself the survivor of the apocalypse and a resident of what is called the Vortex World. Given amazing powers and capabilities bestowed upon you from the Magatama given to you by Lucifer, you must set out on a quest to help recreate the world how it once was, or give birth to a new world with the guidance of a Reason?

my "challenge" question is: if the world ended, and you were told that only you could rebuild it, what type of society would you create? would you let your religious beliefs, your free will or the actions around you decide how a new world should be made?

My morals, which were in part shaped by my religious upbringing, would play a part in said world re-creation. However, I think that the challenge question is inherently flawed. Unless you blindly follow the decree of an absolute authority figure, like say the Pope, there won't be a dividing line between free will and religious beliefs.

Answering the question that I believe you meant to ask, no, I would not blindly adhere to the tenets of a religion in order to re-create the world, and I don't think anyone here would, to be honest.

As for the type of society, I believe there must be structure, but not so much as to stifle it. Without a little chaos (read: change), society would stagnate and die like a rotting corpse.

This.
I might not seem it, but I'm very religious, and even I wouldn't be all "WORSHIP MY GOD OR YOU AREN'T ALLOWED TO EXIST."

That question assumes that I had no part in the end of the world... :hmm:

Humans have built-in morals; there's no need for a religion to provide us with such a set. Religions are good for satisfying the human need for knowledge. We're control freaks and we like to know wth is going on so we make up stuff when we do not; hence religion. If I were to start a world grounds-up, religion would come by itself. If I got to start off with current day technology, it wouldn't be necessary.

Claiming you're smart while misspelling Atheist and science isn't the best way to get your point across. :(

Actually, science points more towards a creation than evolution. Ever hear of the Cambrian Explosion?

Yeah, most people haven't. :(

Edit: I use entirely too many emotes.

It's been a while since that's happened. You're behind a couple hundred years. You or Ireland, one of the two. :|

Seb raises a good point: if we started with current day tech, would religion develop at all? I personally think that it would. Science answers more questions today than it did ten thousand years ago, but there are still things we don't know, and there are things that science can't explain. Whether these things can be explained eventually or not is another argument, but in re-creating the world with modern tech, there would still be a place for religion, IMO.

People can believe what they want, when they want, how they want, who am I to tell them if it's right or wrong? It's their beliefs.
