(Total sales in the first nine days: 133,000.) 2009 - Activision Blizzard releases Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the USA and UK. 13th 1982 - Scott Safran of Pennsylvania scores a world record 41,336,440 in Asteroids. The record continued to hold through until 2005. 2001 - Konami releases Metal Gear Solid 2 for the PlayStation 2 in the US. 1.8 million copies are sold in the first two weeks.
14th 1979 - At Atari, Jed Margolin proposes "Warp Speed", a 3D perspective graphics first-person space war game played against either a person at a linked machine, or a computer-controlled enemy player. The proposal is approved and is later released as the Star Wars arcade game. 2000 - Square EA releases Final Fantasy IX for the PlayStation in the US. 2002 - Microsoft officially launches the Xbox Live online gaming service in the US, and releases the Xbox Live Starter Kit in the US. Sega calls the day "Sonic 2sday" 1995 - At the Shoshinkai show in Chiba, Japan, Nintendo displays the 64-bit cartridge-based Nintendo 64 video game system. Target ship date is April 21, for 25,000 yen (US$250). Games demonstrated are Super Mario 64 and Kirby's Air Ride. Nintendo gives details of the 64DD add-on for the Nintendo 64, with a 64 MB hard drive.
25th 1998 - Nintendo releases The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the Nintendo 64 in the US. Price is US$59.95.
26th 2002 - Square and Enix announce they are merging companies to form Square Enix by April 1, 2003
27th 1998 - In Japan, Sega Enterprises releases the Dreamcast video game system. It features a 200 MHz 128-bit Hitachi SH-4 processor, special NEC graphics processing chip, 26 MB RAM (16 MB main memory, 2 MB sound, 8 MB video), built-in 56 kbps modem, serial port, Web browser, Microsoft Windows CE operating system, one controller, and CD-ROM drive for 1 GB capacity disks. Price is 29,800 Yen, about US$220. 101,490 units sell in the first week. About 10 million systems and 400 different games are shipped in the product's lifetime. Sega also releases the Virtua Fighter 3TB video game for the Dreamcast
28th 2000 - Sony releases the PlayStation 2 video game system in the United Kingdom.
29th 1972 - Atari ships Pong. The first Pong cabinet debuts in Andy Capp's Tavern in Sunnyvale, California, and about 10,000 units are sold, making this the first commercially-successful video game.
