1993 - Panasonic releases the FZ-1 REAL 3DO Interactive Multiplayer in the US.
1995 - Square releases Secret of Evermore for the Super NES in the US. The game is a sequel to Secret of Mana.
1996 - Acclaim Entertainment releases Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 for the Super NES in the US.
1999 - Nintendo releases Pokémon Yellow Version: Special Pikachu Edition for the Game Boy Color in the US. (1 million copies sell in 14 days, making it the fastest selling Nintendo title.)


October 4th
1995 - Nintendo releases Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island for the Super NES in the US. (Total sales: 4.12 million.)
1997 - Gunpei Yokoi, inventor and toy maker, dies. He designed Nintendo's Game & Watch handheld games, Game Boy, and Game Boy Pocket.
2005 - Ubisoft releases Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in the US, Konami releases Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow for the Nintendo DS in the USA, and Atlus releases Trauma Center: Under the Knife for the Nintendo DS in the USA.

1992 - Nintendo releases Final Fantasy Mystic Quest for the Super NES in the US.

1981 - At the Citicorp Center in Manhattan, New York, Atari sponsors an open tournament of arcade games. Frank Cretella scores 118,740 in Asteroids, setting a new national record.
1992 - Nintendo releases Metroid II: The Return of Samus for the Game Boy.

1994 - Square releases Final Fantasy III for the Super NES in the US. This is known as Final Fantasy VI in Japan. (440,000 copies sell.)
2002 - Acclaim releases Burnout 2: Point of Impact for the PlayStation 2 in England. Acclaim offers to pay drivers' speeding tickets incurred that day.

2004 - Nintendo releases Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door for the GameCube in the US.


October 13th
1992 - Nintendo and Sony reach an agreement on a standard for CD-ROM players for a new video game system that can play Super NES cartridges and CD-ROMs. Nintendo will license all game software, and Sony will license, through Nintendo, all other software types.
1996 - Acclaim Entertainment releases Mortal Kombat Trilogy for the PlayStation in the US.
2009 - Sony Computer Entertainment releases Uncharted 2: Among Thieves for the PlayStation 3 in the USA.

1978 - Namco releases the Galaxian arcade game in Japan.

1977 - Atari introduces the Atari Video Computer System (VCS). Price is US$190 with one cartridge, extra game cartridges cost US$20 each.
2001 - Microsoft announces that the Xbox video game system will go on sale in Europe on March 14, for 479 euros, and Capcom releases Devil May Cry for the PlayStation 2 in the US.

October 18th
1985 - Nintendo releases the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in the United States. The NES comes with the Robotic Operating Buddy and the Zapper light gun. Price is US$125. Bundled with the console is Super Mario Bros. (Total worldwide sales: 40.24 million, a record still held in January 2004.)
1994 - Sega releases the Sonic & Knuckles video game for the Genesis in the US.


October 21st
1998 - Square releases Xenogears for the PlayStation in the US, Konami releases Metal Gear Solid for the PlayStation in the US (350,000 copies are sold in the first three days. Total sales over its lifetime: 6 million copies.) and in Japan, Nintendo releases the Game Boy Color.
2002 - In Japan, Square unveils the Final Fantasy X-2 video game, showing a video trailer for the game, and Nintendo releases the Mario Party 4 video game for the GameCube in the US.


October 22nd
1996 - Sega releases the Net Link modem and Internet Web browser, a US$200 plug-in adapter for the Saturn. Sega announces that it will develop, with Catapult's XBAND technology, Internet-based online game play for Net Link by March 1997.
2001 - Take 2 Interactive releases the Grand Theft Auto III video game for the PlayStation 2 in the US. (About 11 million copies are sold in seven months.)
