RIGHT, I don't know shit about laptops, been looking at them all day and I've got a shortlist of ones I like but need to pick one of these out to add to it too:

1
2
3

SO, as far as I can see, 1 has a better processor but only has integrated graphics, while 2 and 3 aren't as good in terms of processors but have a proper (or close to it, for a laptop, or whatever) graphics option. Is there one I should outright choose over another or is it a matter of preference based on what I want to do with the machine?

Also 2 and 3 are the same but with different storage sizes and one has blu-ray too, right?

and are ACER a good make overall?

I'M BAD AT THIS.

Acer is not a good make. I'd steer clear personally. I like ASUS, Lenovo and Dell (many people don't, but fuck them).

First off. What are you going to be using the laptop for? What do you want the laptop to be able to do?

1. That processor is a monster and something that you probably wouldn't need unless you're going to be doing a lot of video editing. The integrated graphics is on par with a Radeon HD 5550 in terms of performance, so it's nothing to be seen as a negative. Low resolution. More RAM than you would likely need.

2. Good processor, would perform well with almost all tasks. Good video card, would be able to play modern games with decent settings. Bluray is a useless expense considering the laptop has a low resolution.

3. Pretty much the same as #2

I would go with 2 if you're set on picking from that lineup.

With that said, I just bought a Lenovo with an i3. The performance is excellent for such an inexpensive machine (got it on sale for $350). I've been considering tossing in an SSD...the HDD is a pretty big bottleneck for everything I do with it. (though it still plays Fallout NV on medium settings @~30fps)

My current laptop of choice is a dell that I've had for the past 5 years, had no problems with it and really like the build quality and that sort of thing, but that was a Studio laptop or something, and there are a couple of dells that I like the look of. Also have a Samsung laptop that I got free from my university (fuck yeah socialism.) and that's been all right, and managed to survive being thrown about 6 foot in the air by myself (don't ask, wasn't exactly my brightest moment.)

This is the Dell I've been looking at, it's expensive, but my dad gets a discount through BP for whatever reason and seeing as this is a birthday present and my brother's managed to convince my parents to pay for him to go on a ski trip, my parents are feeling generous, apparently.

I'll have a look at ASUS and Lenovo laptops as well, had a brief look at Lenovo before and got confused by their branding (like I said, bad at this.), but if you two recommend them then it's worth the effort to make sense of it I guess.

I actually have spent a fair amount of time with the dell 17r se. its a great laptop. word of caution though the integrated webcam is terribad. I mean unusable. if that isnt important to you, fantastic machine. if it is, I'd still recommend it but then get a usb cam like the Logitech C920.

feel free to ask me anything you like about the laptop

Yeah, that really doesn't matter to me, and if at some point it suddenly does start mattering, thn I'll just invest in a USB webcam.

Only questions I'd really have would be about the case and the quality of that, my current Fell Studio has a really sturdy casing that I really like, but having used cheaper Dell models (Inspirons, etc) they seemed a bit flimsy. Could easily be attributed to Dell skimping on build quality as they're more budget laptops, but wasn't sure if in the 5 years since I got my current one Dell had just decided to be a bit more carefree with all their laptop rands.

Found this one as well.

Not as much ram but 6gb isn't anything to balk at, smaller hard drive but 750gb is definitely enough for me and I've got external hard drives and stuff I can use too, but also it looks SO much nicer than the Dell with regards to aesthetics. Thoughts?

Or you could pay an extra £50 and get this bad boy.

i7, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD...and it's a Samsung so quality assured (I never go for any other electronics brand if I can help it).

Does it have to be a laptop? Can't you roll with a desktop?
