Nintendawg's School(as in that group of people, not his literal...you get the idea)'s power is out, but I'm pretty sure they're all alright.
Dunno about other peeps.

Keep safe, guys.

I'm in North Carolina, but I'm far enough inland that we didn't really have to worry about it. We got some rain and a lot of wind yesterday, and we're still getting wind, but nothing like what's going on up north or even on the coast in-state like my brother and our friend in the Marines are dealing with in Camp Lejeune and Cherry Point.

I guess this hurricane did what it did just because it was so gigantic. In terms of a hurricane, it was fairly weak as a Cat. 1, but I guess wind speed isn't everything.

These are from New York. How the fuck do you clean out subway tunnels?

Erryone's fine, this side of town. Power only went out from like 8:30pm to 6:30am, and we're fairly sure they shut it down purposefully so that restoring it isn't difficult. That doesn't mean there aren't still many without electricity though, which sucks.

I haven't seen any extreme flooding in the immediate area, but there has been a fair bit of destruction around the neighborhood over here... I really should've snapped a photo of it, but a road was blocked due to two trees and a powerline all taken down in the middle of the road. Absolutely insane. There are also various store-fronts that were torn apart as well. There doesn't seem to be destruction around every corner, but it's definitely noticeable, and I really feel for the people whose houses were torn up.

Moving further away from Jersey, I hear that Staten Island got absolutely wrecked. Stories of people losing their entire houses and everything. Really saddening stuff. ;_;

Also, anyone else see the crazy stuff this storm conjured up? There are places that got struck with 2 feet of snow from this very storm. It's insanity.

We have all kinds of structures just like the rest of the world :/ Stone, brick, cinder block, wood, steel, combinations, etc. You'll also see huts made from mud and feces if you're in the right areas of your local ghetto.

sorry if my original comment came across as nasty, it's just that 99% of american home building tv shows I see is that the houses are a bulit from wood with a veneer of bricks on the outside or shingling

I guess its like why Sam Vimes in the Discworld series will buy a new pair of cheap paper shoes every two months when they fall to bits for $10 a pair ($60 a year) than pay $40 for leather shoes that will last a year.

Price and ease.

Actually, there's a TON of buildings on the East Coast made of brick and such. Lots of houses/buildings on the east coast tend to be much older compared to the rest of the US.

As for why we use mainly wood: We have a shitton of it, so cost/convenience is definitely part of it. Also, I think a majority of Americans prefer the look of your typical suburban middle-class home rather than old-school brick buildings. I personally like the look of old brick buildings at Universities and stuff, but if I were looking for a house for myself, it'd probably be a typical generic one.

I'm sure there's also various things having to do with building code, local regulations and all that shit. Also, most of those home-renovation shows you see probably exist in areas where it just makes sense. For example, a house here in Nevada could be made ot of just about anything, but wood makes the most sense. It's a desert. We don't really have tornadoes and all that shit, there really just isn't much of a risk in terms of flooding/weather damage. Also, the last thing you'd want is to live in a brick oven when it's 110 degrees.

Also, Mexicans are good at building shit out of wood rather quick for about half the cost of what it would be to pay a 'murrican to do it.

I was going to say this. We are very crafty.

But yea, ditto on Americans using wood because it is cheaper. Also, from my not-so-scientific findings, wood buildings tend to last longer in earthquake locations because they have some degree of elasticity. You won't find too many brick buildings in my neighborhood. Maybe some in old Downtown Los Angeles, but it is not very common to find brick homes. Wood also tends to insulate well, those LA summers ain't no joke homie.
