Well at 17 he can go see R rated movies by himself unless his state gov says otherwise.

Like in my state, you have to be 18 to see R movies in a theater, but you can buy them at 17. herpderp idiot rednecks in charge

17's the age you can purchase age-restricted media, excluding porn(R-rated movies, M-rated games, explicit music, etc), but other than that, it's just "that one age in between the age you can drive and the age where you're an adult."
