That title isn't long enough to be as descriptive as I'd like. So, let me expand.

What is the one game, or game series, that epitomises gaming for you? Which game is the Meaning Of Gaming for you? In your gaming universe, which game is in the centre?

For me, it'd be Daley Thompsons Decathlon on the Sinclair Spectrum.

Image

Oh, the days I spent nursing bruised fingers. Oh, the number of N and M keys I had to replace. Oh, the joy I had as I heard the 8-bit tones of "Chariots Of Fire" as I stood on the podium, gold medal around my neck....

Anyone who has played Track And Field will easily be able to play this game, but while Track And Field was more arcadey, Daley Thompson's Decathlon was, well, I want to say "realistic" but this is the Speccy we're talking here.

Consisting of the ten events British athlete Daley Thompson hammered in the early 80s, you had to prove your prowess on the field by throwing javelins, jumping the hurdles, doing the long jump, the high jump, and ending with the 1500m sprint. The rest were button-hammering games, where N and M were left and right, and the space bar was the "fire" button. The 1500m however was something different.

Image

Pressing M would speed your character up, and N would slow them down. However, you had the added threat of stamina, and the faster you went, the more tired you got. Slowing down refilled this bar, but go to slow and you risk ending up in last place. This generally resulted in a steady pace until the last 100m, when you'd just floor it and hope for the best.

Graphics at best were basic, but goddamn, it played so well that no-one cared. In fact, now that I think about it, there were no background music either! Just plinky sound effects for throwing objects and landing on mats.

It doesn't matter. This game rocked. And even now, I'll crack out the Speccy, load DTD in 48k Basic, and just rip the shit out of the N and M buttons.

So yes. Daley Thompson's Decathlon. This Is Gaming.

LOL. Man, I couldn't tell you the hours, nay, DAYS, I wasted on this game, and STILL it draws me back for more. This was my game of choice in the 80s and 90s, and it means more to me than any other game.

I have 2. Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy. Before the days of achievements and unlockables, these games had me coming back for more and more by challenging me to beat them in less time, or with more completed each time.

These pics make me so nostalgic.. This game is so pwnsome. No other has been able to capture my imagination in a comparable way, which probably has to do with how young I was when I played the game.. I wasn't so good at gaming so it was a very hard and long struggle for me to get out of Black Mesa. It really felt like I was trapped in there and the day I got out... I was so wowed and was literally happy as fuck the whole day. It probably took a few months for me to complete the game.. =)

The Donkey Kong Country series aways did it for me. Before that I didn't really care about any series, sure I played some Mario Bros and Sonic but I didn't really care that much.

The only SNES game I ever owned was Donkey Kong Country 2 (It came with the SNES). I rented the other two regularly though. I loved just about everything about them. The music, graphics, character designs, everything. I watched the cartoon they made about it despite what shit it was just because it was Donkey Kong Country.

Though in recent years the series has taken a turn for the worst with shit like Konga and Jungle Beat, at the very least Paon has made some amazing swinging games (DK King of Swing and Jungle Climber). Both which I have played to death.

Fallout.

Not sure about the recent Fallout 3 trailer though. I just can't see Fallout as a 1st/3rd person shooter...

Still, I'll wait and see how I feel when it releases.

Fallout. Indeed, probably the best RPG ever ever ever, hands down, no doubt in the world. Fallout all the emmer effing way baby.

But not that.

No for me, it would have to be Dizzy. Yes Dizzy, and the Yolk Folk

I played these games to DEATH when I was a wee un, and whenever I think about games I've loved, Dizzy always comes back.

This was so advanced for it's time though. Yeah there was that element of Platoform gaming involved, but you had to solve mysteries and puzlles, and collect things like snorkles to go underwater etc etc. This was the most played game by myself for many, many years on my Amstrad CPC.

I also think a lot about Sonic the Hedgehog (I know it's an obvious one but they were so good at the time). Streets of Rage, and Smash TV.

The latter was practically Running Man - The game. "KILLIAN, i AM GOING TO LIVE TO MAKE YOU EAT YOUR CONTRACT. BUT I HOPE YOU LEAVE ENOUGH ROOM FOR MY FIST, BECAUSE I'M GOING TO RAM IT DOWN YOUR THROAT, AND PULL OUT YOUR STOMACH!!!"

IMHO Stephen King's greatest movie adaptation.
