I don't know if this is considered a "last-gen" game or not, but I figured since a sequel is quickly approaching with what seem like vast improvements, the original is basically last-gen.

Anyhow, played the game the other day at a friends house who got the game through Steam (my graphics card can't handle games very well), and then finished it up tonight. SUPERB game. It's up there with Super Metroid and Beyond Good and Evil. One day it will be considered a classic. I love the dialogue, the puzzles, the concepts, the atmosphere, everything. It's just sooooo good. I can't wait for Portal 2.

I agree completely. It speaks for itself, really; a two-hour game with five characters has gotten not only an enormous fanbase, but a massive profit, AND a sequel, in today's standards.
That's just wild.

It's already considered a classic, I think :D It was unique and quirky in all the good ways. It's definitely a great game, good for you that you discovered it. Btw, you don't need a very good graphics card to run it. If your computer is otherwise decent it might be worth the investment to be able to play Portal and other Valve games.

The Internet ruined Portal for me, the incessant quoting and companion cube fucking removed all charm from the characters for me.

Pretty funny that Portal was never actually intended for commercial release and was just made to tests Valves new dev team.

Yup

I believe the second is gonna try too hard.

Portal was so good because it didn't try to be something is wasn't. It was simple puzzles with an unexpected little story. The second, I beleeb, is gonna try to incorperate a huge story background and ruin it by making it too complicated.

Wait and see I guess but I fucking called it first.

This is valve we're talking about. They couldn't make a bad game even if they tried.

I doubt that, considering Portal is pretty much just a jazzed up version of a student project (Narbacular Drop, go look it up).
Valve employed the student team because they were impressed by the portal mechanics in Narbacular Drop and wanted them in a game.

True story: Valve once tried to make a bad game. The result was Half-Life 2. They're still confused about its popularity.

Valve should get in the console market. They would dominate and we all know that.

They are, their brining STEAM CLOUD FEATURES to PSN to support Portal 2.

I make a point of Steam Cloud as many fools are thinking that Steam is coming to consoles bringing with it PC games.

That's what I meant, there's just no point going into details about something that many people on this board know little about :um:

Yeah, it's pretty crazy that it was just basically a tech demo, and turned out so amazingly well. That does bring up concerns about Portal 2, but as others have mentioned, Valve is incredible. I think they'll be able to retain the charm of the first while introducing new aspects that expand on the strengths of the first.

Joe, I'm sorry that the internet ruined it for you. It actually intrigued me and drew me toward the game. I wanted to know what all this cake business was about and then the companion cube as well. I think it was worth it.
