OK, what's the deal with this game? Half the people I know claim it's the best game ever and one of my mates has finally hounded me enough to make me play it.

So far it's incredibly dull and the controls are fucking awful. I've been made to run around town asking anyone and everyone about men in black suits and a black car. Now I have to find sailors so I've been asking people where sailors hang out. THEY'RE SAILORS. THEY HANG OUT IN BARS YOU INBRED COCK. Why do I need to ASK people where to find sailors? Go to bars or go to the fucking harbour. But I digress... I've yet to hear ANYBODY make a gay comment when I ask them about sailors, this upsets me. :(

I don't get it. So many people tell me this game is amazing yet so far there has been nothing which makes me like it. Except for the kitten. I like the kitten.

Any of you guys ever played it? If so, do you like it? And if so... WHY?

Its a me simulator (if you imagine you dont understand what anyone is saying)... why would I pay to play it?

I used to have it, it dated very quickly. I can imagine it would be hard to go back to.

Well I have an agreement with a mate so I have to play it but, unless it gets more fun quickly, I'm going to cancel our agreement.

I just want a game to be fun. :(

While my PS3 had YLOD, I played that gouls and ghosts game on the SNES. Never did get past the first level. :hmm:

It is a wonderful peek into what Japan is like, at least superficially. I remember when I first came here less than a year after playing that game and saying "wow, this is just like Shenmue."

However, you are right. It is a really boring game. It might get better after you go further into it but if that's the case I never made there.

I'm one of these people who refuses to wait and see if a game gets better.

If it doesn't grab me from the start then why waste my time with it on the off-chance it might improve?

After much arguing with my mate I've agreed to play to the end of the first disc. If I still think it's boring then I'll stop playing.

Only reason I'm still playing is that my Xbox is fucked. :(

Shenmue and Shenmue 2 = The Game of Forever.

Played 'em both to completion multiple times, and would commit heinous crimes for some series closure.

I wish I had that attitude the first time I ever played Halo on the Xbox.

I loved both Shenmue games. They were fucking amazing, but they're subtle, man. You can go do what you want, manage your own money, spend it in the arcade, go out and get a job, manage your time....but it's all subtle. You have to put the effort in, man.

Plus sega used to make WICKED combat...

The thing with Shenmue is that it plays on the atmosphere. The primary enjoyment of Shenmue, for me anyways, comes from the fact that you're supposed to go and just explore. It's worth just taking it in. The atmosphere is rich, dense.

The problem with Shenmue is that from a game standpoint, it's horribly unbalanced. The first half of the game, the interaction comes almost exclusively from QTEs; the second half is biased with actual combat. The pacing is glacial, and the gameplay itself is made up of menial tasks.

But for some people, it still works, because it's a day in the life - all of life. Other games glamourize or stream line life, like Persona 3 and 4; Shenmue will make you slog, through the good and bad.

Try the Yakuza games, instead, if you haven't already. It's Shenmue...with balls.

IGN made a list of the greatest Dreamcast games of all time, and since this wasn't in it, apparently a lot of people got angry over it.

On the other side of things, IGN also didn't even mention Sonic Adventure 1 or 2, which both got rave reviews from IGN when they came out, even above some of the games that did, in fact, make the list.

Moral of the story is, don't rely on IGN for information.

One of my favourite games, but some may find it a bit dry.

Like your muva.

But seriously, it is a great game for those with a huge amount of patience. We're talking about a game where you have to get a job (and attend and work said job) in order to advance the story. I shit thou notst.

very true, it's like a life simulator but it has a fucking purpose unlike second life and similar nonsense.
