This really isn't a big step. Getting more energy out of the fuel than they put into making it can be analogized to lighting a firecracker with a match. The whole process has to be self-sustainable, meaning they're going to have to beef up their fuel source, which is really fucking dangerous because they're going to need a ping pong ball sized sun inside of a building. I hope I can see fusion commercialized before I die, I really do. |

Guys, I think we're overlooking the most important part of this: Quote: Omar Hurricane, the lead author of the report, said the latest improvement came by controlling the implosion of the spherical pellet more carefully. In previous experiments, the pellet distorted as it was crushed, which seemed to reduce the efficiency of the process. By squashing the fuel more softly, helium nuclei that are produced in the fusion reactions dump their energy into the fuel, heating it up even further, and driving a cycle of ever more fusion.
