Viruses that infect other computers by sound? You bet your dick.

Now I can finally spam Carl with my Dancing vegeta gifs by sound!

Even the author is sceptical about this. Read his comment at the bottom.

yeah... infecting a machine via sound seems basically impossible to achieve, but I actually don't think that's what the article was trying to convey. I think the idea was more that 2 infected machines would communicate that way, which is admittedly very possible. Causing the infection through sound wouldn't likely work because the receiving machine would need some means of translating the high frequency sounds into something malicious.

Whilst it's possible to transmit data via sound, surely it would need some kind of receiver / decoder etc? Not sure if story is true or hoax.

Precisely. I could see two infected machines communicating via sound, but actually infecting another machine... I can't see how that'd be possible.

The only thing I can think of is that data is received via a microphone, for which the software driving that device would already have to be pre-infected. That said though, with no other sound transmissions in the direct vicinity, surely the 'transmitter' would still have to be pretty close? Doesn't seem viable to me.
