This aside, to those this matters to, what are your thoughts on this - the first pope to hail from the Americas, but also one who has been so critical of the Catholic church in the past and doesn't share the same taste in overpriced mansions laden with gold that the rest of the church seems to enjoy so much.

I'm very interested to see not so much what he's going to start demanding from the world, but what he starts demanding from the church. Maybe he'll be the first one with enough balls to say "for fucks sake guys, sell all those pointless golden candelabras and send some fucking money to the poor, you extravagant asshats".

What say you, Terra and Smokey, considering no-one else here will likely give much of a poop?

I remember Smokey getting all sandy-vagina'd when I made some blanket generalisation about the pope and paedophilia a while back, so me in my religious-ignorant brain just put two and two together...

I wonder what the Catholics on the Falkland Isles will make of this?

I'm not personally invested in this, but honestly, this new guy isn't the first progressive pope in the last hundred years. One of the first things that Benedict did was relinquish "first among equals" status, which was one of the biggest things that caused the split between the Vatican and the Russian Orthodox Church in the first place.

With that said, it'll be interesting to see what this new guy will do. Benedict only turned progressive when he took the Holy See, but apparently this guy has been a real firebrand for years and years, so again, it'll be interesting.

Catholicism is, and always will be flawed until they realise the necessity of contraception. A pope can be 'progressive' but as long as the Vatican continues to discourage the use of condoms in HIV-prominent areas then in my opinion it is nothing more than a destructive force in this world.

I legitimately thought of the baseball team first when I read this. I don't even know why.

As a Catholic and as a hispanic I'm very happy with the new Pope. He still is anti-gay, anti-contraceptives, etc. but by Catholic leadership standards he is very progressive. I look forward to what he'll change. The church changes very slowly so I expect he won't do anything drastic but I'm sure he's going to lay foundations for later changes. Perhaps we'll have female priests in the next 20 years or so.

I'm just happy to have Benedict out. I know it's probably sacrilegious to say but I was never a fan of him. He just rubbed me the wrong way since the first time I saw him.
