Cas, make sure that you do your best to set up the Kinect at one of the recommended heights (I think it's either 2 feet off the floor or 6 feet off the floor. Get it as close as possible to one of those heights, and you'll be good. Also, go through all of the calibration thoroughly, and do the Kinect ID thing everyday for about a week (so it can see you in different clothes, different states of awake/tired) and it'll work just dandy for you. It'll work fine after initial set-up, but it gets used to the room and you as a person, so there ya go.

Also, maybe look into getting the Dance Central games. They're a blast and without a doubt the best thing on Kinect.

AlsoAlso, hop on XBL and download Kinect Party. It's free until the first (So is The Walking Dead Ep 1, but that's not Kinect).

3 feet was one of the heights suggested - which is what our mantelpiece is.

Also, this add-on changes the 6ft distance required to 4ft distance, so it should be fine in our smallish room.

Also also, Kinect Party was downloaded as soon as she knew what was coming (the add-on came Christmas Eve, the Kinect and the rest today).

Awesome! Yeah, it was 3 or 6 feet high (not in between), and 6 sq ft of space to jump around in! I don't know how well the adapter works, but I don't see any reason why it wouldn't. I really hope it does. Getting used to voice commands and everything is well worthwhile, because there's lots of things that are convenient with it. Look into whether or not you'd be interested in Wreckateer or Leedmees... I think they're both 200MSP right now. They're not bad. We all know Wreckateer is basically Angry Birds with castles and shit... not as bad as it looked at e3, honestly. Leedmees is kinda like Lemmings, except you use your body to make their path.

I think the sweet spot for most rooms is actually recommended between .5 and 1.0m elevation - which as 3ft is roughly equivalent to a metre, sounds spot on to me
Seems weird for people to recommend 1.5 metres though. Most peoples TVs are more than that alone - half a metre would mean it would get in the way!

By the way. I need cheap kinect. Well, I may do. I'm thinking of hooking one up to my PC for motion capturing with Blender.
