My two ferrets are both neuterred and as long as you don't over-bathe them (we haven't bathed them in like... I dunnno, over a month now and they're both fine) then they don't smell that bad at all. They're probably due at least one bath sometime soon actually. It's true, their waste is always pretty strong smelling, so make sure you regularly change their litter trays. That contributes a lot to the smell of them and their bedding, I've found.

You have to make sure to shore up your house to prevent them getting into places that would be harmful to them, like behind the fridge or cooker or into tiny little spaces that are too small for them (they're not like cats, if they think they can get into a place they will bloody well try and nothing you can do will dissuade them from trying except if they hurt themselves. Cats go 'do my whiskers fit? no? fuck that noise'. Ferrets go 'OMG A TINY GAP NO BIGGER THAN MY PAW IMMA GET IN IT' they are the Moon Moon of pets.). You also have to keep a watch on them because while they CAN be housetrained, you can never housetrain them 100%. There WILL be the occasional accident.

They are also playful 100% of the time, all the time, when they are awake. But they only wake up for about 4 hours a day at most? So they're very convenient.
