It's just dumb handholdy shit in a game series known for its complexity. Stuff like the Super Guide in NSMB/DKCR can be justified, because as a platform game, it doesn't necessarily make it any easier, but when you take away what makes a game series unique just to make it accessible to people who aren't willing to try to get better, it's really obnoxious to fans of the series, even if it's optional.

I remember when an easy mode was talked about and the internet shit bricks made of rage and hate.

I was all "Why? You don't HAVE to use it. It just means newcomers won't get deterred."

Complaining about an easy mode in Dark Souls or a non permadeath mode in Fire Emblem or driving lines in Forza is as retarded and stupid and pointless as complaining about cheat codes in games.

Unless you're FORCED to use them, shut the fuck up and just play the goddamn games.

I've been a fan of Etrian Odyssey since the first one.

The latest one has a casual mode that makes battles a bit easier, you don't lose the Ariadne Thread when you use it and if you die you just end up back in town.

I have not bitched once about this cause I know it'll make it more accesible to newcomers, therefore more sales and therefore, new games.

And P4A did the tap one button for combos thing.

There's a difference between a regular game with an easy mode, or a standalone with one, and one deliberately designed to not be easy having one.
I'm fine with Viewtiful Joe having one, for example, but if like, Touhou was given one, I'd think it was stupid.
It doesn't offend me, I'm not ENRAGED, it's just dumb to take something that sets your series apart, something that makes you unique, and remove it just to make your game easier when it was specifically made to be difficult. Even if it's optional.
It's not like combos in fighting games/permadeath in TBS/the general ballcrushing difficulty of Dark Souls make the games impossible. You've just got to put time into getting them right. And if you're not willing to play the game, what's even the point?

It's not removing it if it's still there.

FE:A still has permadeath. If you choose to.

Dark Souls will still be difficult. If you choose to.

Fighters will still have 250 button fingerdancing. If you choose to.

Making an option to make things easier for newcomers isn't gonna kill anyone. If anything it will make more sales.

It's taking a unique quirk and making it less unique, is all I'm sayin'.

I seem to remember a lot of people being upset with a certain huge gaming company shifting their demographic to the casual audience to get more sales. :hmm:

Is it really dumb though, to make a game more accessable to people who might not normally play them due to the difficulty? In fact, is it any more dumb than Uncharted or Killzone or Guitar Hero or King Of Fighters or any other game having a selection of difficulties to play on?

No.

It just means that more people can have a go at something that may otherwise have been too hard, and the only people who get butthurt are those who want their precious niche games to remain niche, not realising doing so might just kill it.

Also, for the record, if FF5 had a mode where you started out with all jobs unlocked and most skills unlocked, I would give precisely zero fucks, as I'd just select normal mode and play it. Y'know, like a mature guy.

1. No it ain't, its keeping shit as it is, but giving folk the option to change things if they want. The quirk is still there, untouched.

2. Which one?

I think the furore over Nintendo wanting to be best friends with soccer moms and grandparents was that they gave no other option.

It wasn't like "Here, have this proper game, but we're also going to make stuff for casuals". They pretty much abandonded the people who were supporting them, and left the Wii's fate to third party devs, who either did the same thing, or made half-assed versions of PS3/360 games.

Sure, there were a few good games on Wii, but just a few. Not like previous Nintendo machines where great games were readily available. They didn't allow any other option other than buying a competitors machine, which many did.

lol, this is what happens when I forget to type "was"...

Choice is not bad. But it does make a different experience. I can see why a game with a hardcore following could have these concerns. I obviously welcome them considering I need it for play FE. Cases like option assists are not bad. I prefer that they reward the player though, and not just ask the player politely to ignore it, like heart medals in Hero Mode of Skyward Sword.

Personally I played the game with permadeath enabled and I can't imagine playing it with out it. I don't mind that there was an easy option (my sister played the game in that mode, she wouldn't have played the game otherwise) but I feel that the permadeath option is so much better experience. It brings the intensity up and it's really not that hard. Yes you'll lose a few characters every once and a while but it gives you replacement characters all the time too.

People should really try and play with permadeath, I guarantee it will be a more satisfying experience. If you can't do it then you're really missing out but thats why theres an option to play without it. Maybe even beat it without permadeath and then replay it with it on (that is of course assuming you want to play through it twice)
