I've just noticed this game, and I'm thinking of picking it up for the 3DS...
Thing is, I've never played the Tales of etc games before. This looks good, but it's hard to really make a judgement about it from what I'm seeing. Anyone here play it? I recall Waka getting it, if memory serves, but I can't directly ask him right now.

Anybody? :hi:

I'm pretty sure Sean's played it in its original incarnation. I haven't played Abyss, but the Tales games I've played (Symphonia and Vesperia) were extremely enjoyable. Even the Symphonia sequel wasn't bad, just incredibly uninspired.

Tales of the Abyss was without a doubt the best PS2 Tales of game.

I personally enjoyed it more than Symphonia. Abyss is probably my second favorite Tales of game, Vesperia being the first. Just, be ready to hate the main character for awhile. He's a rich brat, but he grows slowly throughout the game and all that jazz. Kinda the point of his character, I think you're SUPPOSED to dislike him initially.

I'd say go for it. IIRC, the 3DS version has an updated battle system to be closer to Vesperia's. That's a good thing. If you don't like real-time/action battles, then it won't be your bag, but the series definitely has its own style.

^Well, I prefer real time, but I'm trying to figure out just how it works. Nothing's ever real-time in RPGs that I've seen, there's always a catch... Whether it be FFX's 'wait for your attack to charge up' kinda deal, or a crazy 'attack when this unrelated meter fills up' deal, like in FF13 (I liked the paradigm system, but there was far too much to manage in a small window of time. It's fun, but a little too convoluted for my taste).

I'll probably get the game after reading the above, but could someone explain what the combat is like in a bit more detail than just a video?
It looks like you get small combos, and could chain them together with your partners and such, but I haven't come across anything that really explains if there's any catch.

I don't know exactly how the 3DS version's combat is, but from what I heard they upgraded it to the Vesperia system.

Think of it KIND of like a fighting game. In this example the buttons may not be exact, but the general premise remains:

Battle takes place on a 3D plane. Generally you will move left and right (Vesperia did allow you to press a trigger to free run in any direction though, I'm not sure if they included that in the update of Abyss). One shoulder button will allow you to change your target. The left stick will control movement. The D-Pad allows you to switch between your party on the fly. X is block. Pressing back away from the enemy on the stick while blocking will allow a backstep. A is for basic attacks. Pressing a direction on the left stick will alter your basic attack (aiming high, low, etc), and can help you build a combo. B is for Artes. Pressing a direction on the left stick will decide which arte you can use (artes use SP). Some artes can be used as a follow up to the arte before (think of it like a fighting game: Basic attack, special attack cancel into another special attack). You can map your artes and change your CPU allies tactics prior to battle.

Pausing the game during battle will allow you to select items or change tactics.

Generally, you won't be have to worry too much about meters and all that. It's kind of a watered down fighting game in the way battles play out.

So a combo may look like: Basic Attack > Basic Attack > Basic Attack > Normal Arte > Burst Arte > Mystic Arte (certain artes may require you to have your overlimit gauge filled, which fills automatically by dealing or taking damage).

The number of basic attacks you can string together is dependent on the weapon equipped. Some may only allow 3 in a row, others later on may allow 9. Depends on the weapon, character, and level.

Generally, there won't be any stopping in a battle unless you're using an item, and if you're using items often, you're under leveled.

Thanks man.

Keep in mind that the thing that really sets the Tales of series apart from other RPGs are the skits. You'll see a thing pop up and usually you press the back/select button to play them. They're little conversations between characters, and there's TONS of them. It really help build the characters, and the interactions with your party. Because of these, the characters in Tales games tend to have a lot more substance than other series, since there's a lot more interaction between them. They're optional, but I wouldn't recommend skipping any of them if you want to really get to know the characters.

There's obviously some more to the battle system, I remember some stuff about powering up elemental skills, but I can't remember exactly how it played out. It's been a long time since I played the game.

There's a cooking system that lets you make meals after battle and stuff if you have the ingredients. They can heal you and provide bonuses and all that. Cooking also leads to skits.

I THINK Abyss was the game that has an active economy based on the events going on in the game/what you've done. Prices will go up and down, so it's pretty neat that way.

So I just picked this game up late yesterday.
I've only been able to put around two hours into it (keep in mind I spent the first hour in the starting area, because I was talking to people and got distracted), but I'm really liking how this plays.

Combat allows you to run in and not even get hurt, if you're skilled enough, and it's fun to try and work up combos.

My only two complaints would be that I can't interact with the environment much, and that the 3D effect is rather weak...
That second one is extremely minor though. Still an entertaining game. :D

I'm glad you're liking it. The best part? Tales games constantly get BETTER as the story progresses. Like... consistently. I thought Tales of Graces f was a little weak (especially after Vesperia), but by the end of the game I was like, "Y'know... that's a pretty fucking good game." Yeah, the battle system is definitely skill based, which is one of the strongest parts about the series. Rather than hoping you don't get fucked over by an attack missing or that the turn order will work in your favor for heals, you have control over that shit.

As for the 3D being weak. I expected as much. It's Bandai-Namco, they weren't going to put much effort into the port.

Keep me updated. I'd like to know how you feel about the game as you progress.

Coming back to deliver on that.

I'm currently at the part where HERE BE SECRETSLuke becomes ambassador, and some crazy chick with a gun attacks Tear.
So far, I'm really liking the game. Myus are annoying as all hell, but I just turn the volume off everytime they talk.
I don't know how to feel about the combat at this point though. I loved it when I first started, but it feels somewhat limited... I probably need to utilize fonic artes a bit more, so I can rack up higher combos.

Overall though, it's been pretty cool so far, bar not being able to push the text a bit quicker in those button-triggered events. They move so slow, and there's no voice acting, so they can drag on at times (especially when there's like three in a row).

Glad you're liking it overall.

Yes, definitely utilize your artes to the fullest. Also, think about switching up who you control in combat. Controlling different people will have you using some different strategies, and it helps break up using the same combos over and over.

Keep on truckin', my friend.

So I haven't updated this in months, but I'mma do it anyways.

After taking several extended breaks from the game, I'm now at the part where HERE BE SECRETSVan is going after St. Binah, but Ion and Natalia were somehow captured while Luke was in a coma. Having Luke cut his hair was pretty cool, if only because of the story significance and the character model change.

On the combat note, I'm still having trouble finding the proper spots to use which artes on the battlefield, but it's not too much of an issue at all.
