Click the orange smiley face, on the top bar of the 3DS menu, and you can see your friend code there.
Friend codes are shorter, and universal, on the 3DS. As for the Miiverse, that'll be the green people on the top right of the menu.

There you can make a username and junk, and set that good stuff up.

So someone fucked up and put the 3DS Friend Code thread under Wii U gaming.

Here is mine: 4167 4952 3231

Also, my Nintendo Network ID is SugaFree3000.

Just add both you ass

The Friend Code is tied to the 3DS. That is what you want to use to play online with people using your handheld. The Nintendo Network ID ties itself into the Miiverse and Wii U internet functionality. There are no friend codes on the Wii U, just your name which you use for online play. But if you want to connect with me on Miiverse, you need to have my Network ID also.

what's a proper miiverse account? How do I do that?

And where do i find my friend requests?

I took my 3DS out today to town (to advise my housemate on buying her 3DS and Pokemon also) and got 10 Streetpasses. Mainly tourists coming to Edinburgh, not a single Scot. A few from England though. Streetpass is cool.

Also bought a Mario game, I'm fairly impressed.
