So I heard that some people are buying this game and getting SOOOO confused that they have no idea whats happening, and therefore consider it "ghey". Well, here's the rundown from someone who doesn't suck at it.
FFXII:RW takes place shortly after the events of the PS2 game FFXII. Vaan is now a fully fledged Sky Pirate, but loses his ship. After finding (read: stealing) a newly discovered ship, he is taken to a new world high above Ivalice where he meets a race of emotionless people called the Aegyl. It transpires that a sinister judge - the Judge Of Wings - is stealing crystals that seem to be the lifeblood of the land.
Playing the game is altogether different. As you win battles you earn "Auracite". These allow you to unlock "espers", which are creatures you can summon to battle for you. Each character can summon creatures in battle and send them off to fight, and battles operate much like the original Warcraft and Starcraft games. If you've played "Lost Magic" on DS, you'll know.
Each esper has its own elements, such as fire, water, lightning, etc. For each element, there's an opposite, so planning battles in advance is a must. Also, there are three attack types - melee, flying and ranged. Melee overpowers ranged but is weak against flying, ranged overpowers flying but is weak against melee, and flying overpowers melee but is weak against ranged. Strategies can be made or broken by simply summoning the right - or wrong - esper.
As the game progresses, you uncover more and more of the Judge Of Wings' plan, as well as her sad history, and work towards not only stopping her but stopping the evil presence that is controlling her against her will....
Its a far cry from the playing style of the console-based FF games, but in its own right, its pretty damned smart. Just a shame that, when I got to the final boss, I discovered that the percentage of game completed (mine was 98% as I'd been doing ALL the sidequests) is also the level at which the final boss will be. So there I was, 5 level 51 characters going up against a level 98 boss. It didn't end well.
If you like Final Fantasy and like Starcraft, then this will most likely be the perfect combination. But for those who simply cannot accept change, you won't get much out of this.
