My issue here is simple. Why do you have a man who doesn't like the Zelda formula reviewing the new Zelda game?

That's a bit silly of a stance, isn't it?

Why have anyone review anything ever then?

If you like the Zelda formula, you already know you love it right? No need for a review from anyone ever.

No need to have anyone who doesn't love Madden review it, 'cause hey, they might not like American football, there's no reason to have it lose points 'cause the person doesn't like that kind of game, yeah?

I'm thinking maybe, just MAYBE, it's so you can get varying opinions from varying sources. Also, you said it yourself, the guy doesn't like the Zelda formula, it probably goes without saying that you should assume he's being a bit negative. On the other side of the coin, if the reviewer loves the Zelda formula, it should go without saying that you should assume he's being overly positive.

Also, am I the only person who thinks it's completely bullshit that they decide to just completely change Link to being right handed for bullshit waggle control reasons?

Fair points, but really, which is the lesser of two evils?

You either get a guy who likes the general formula of Zelda, but may or may not judge the game harshly because he holds the series in high regard. Or, a guy who goes into the game already not liking the formula, and not likely with the same enthusiasm that the fans of the series (the ones who are gonna care about the review) likely have?

I'd probably take the guy who at least likes the game format.

Or better yet, someone who quite honestly doesn't give a shit either way. lol

As for Link, I think I'd be more concerned if I were left handed lol. Honestly, you should be able to change his handedness in game.

Really I don't see either of them as an evil. It's just the nature of reviews. Why write reviews to cater to people already fans of the series, especially when that isn't the only demographic that's going to read them?

I mean, sure, if it's a Nintendo/Zelda-centric site, by all means, yeah, that makes sense.

Really, to be a good review, it should just be honest.

Whether it's positive or negative, it should reflect the honest experience that was had.

When it's something like the controls not working (in a Wii game, mainly), there should be more steps taken to make sure that it's actually a game problem rather than a set-up problem, though. Try it in a different room. Try it with the shades pulled. Try it with a second controller.

Being thorough is more important than having the review out right away without having properly gone through the game.

Changing his handedness in game would actually prove to be more trouble than it's worth on the programmer's part. Collision models would be pretty fucked, and it would essentially mess up parts of the game... Alternatively, they could flip the whole fucking game like they did with TP... >.>

I'm beginning to wonder if this tool forgot to attach the WiiMotion Plus to his controller. He bitches about being able to just wag his sword and have it work, and unresponsive controls at the most inopportune times, yet IGN said emphatically that in this game, if you wag, you die.

His complaints are so contradictory of what everyone else has been saying about Skyward Sword.

You can't actually play the game without Motion+, and there ARE indeed ways to get around being serious. While it's not nearly as fun, or effective, you can do it. Have you seen Jimmy Fallon play the game? If not, that's a prime example of how not to play, but how it could probably work for a while.

While I'm also thinkin' that there might be something fishy with the review, I'm not ready to start pointing the finger and yelling 'THEY'RE DOING IT FOR HITS' or 'THIS GUY IS HOMOGHEY'. Gamespot HAS had a crazy differing opinion on several games as of recent, but that doesn't make them the devil... Though it does seem to make them the black sheep of reviewers, and somewhat damages their credibility to have such differing scores.

Actually, it wouldn't be too difficult at all. It's simply a matter on inverting your calculations. Collisions models wouldn't really change. It would be more about direction, and positioning within the world. If anything the most work involved is that you have to double up some animation for either side of Link.

It's the same idea as playing an NHL hockey game where you can choose handedness on the fly. And they have mixtures of handedness playing within the same game. Some right, some left.

And if we're being honest, Link probably has about the same amount of animations or less than the various positions in NHL games.

I beg to differ, but I'm not a programmer, so I'm left without a proper argument.
You win this round.

Also, it kills me how retailers around Europe are releasing the game early. I'm still bracing for Sunday (whilst hoping Gamestop says 'fuck all' to the street date).

Lol at the shrug

But I would think that a more accurate rebuttal would be if the dude can recreate the problem mentioned in the video (the standing there and not being able to do the finishing move)

The maker of the video made the comment that the point of the rebuttal was basically to ask where the control issues were. I think what he did was more than enough to prove that the Gamespot editor is either full of shit or an absolute spaz.

As an aside, I stopped taking Gamespot the least bit seriously when they were caught taking money to give stellar reviews.

That guy in the video is calm and precise when he's in combat. This seems to be the proper way to play this. Just keep calm and don't spaz out. I guess that slow method just doesn't seem right when it comes to combat, so they try to be fast and efficient, and the controls just can't keep up, and they interpret your movements incorrectly.

There's also the fact that the Gamespot reviewer legit didn't know how to play the game properly.

When aiming something, or even choosing options, in Skyward Sword, you don't have to point at the TV. Motion+ takes care of that by detecting the angle the remote is pointing, and all that jazz. When you reset the pointer (by pressing down on the d-pad) it treats whatever direction the Wiimote was tilted as forward. I feel bad for this poor guy flailing his remote around, and constantly calibrating it all sorts of wrong.

I think it's funny that the guy isn't gonna change the review score though. Gamespot's pretty much gonna accept that flawed review. :\

Figures that they wouldn't review it properly, even after they recognize their error. At least it's not like that one Eurogamer review of an MMO where they were the only review of the game for a long while. There are a lot more reviews of Zelda that accurately (relatively so, at least) reflect the game's nature.

Snagged my pre-ordered copy directly after leaving church. Grabbed snacks and went to my room.

Five hours later, I'm rather happy with my purchase, and I'm about to go play some more. I stand by my statement of how this game controls like a dream. The only thing that took some getting used to had to be the bird controls. Jeebus, them bird controls. They work well, but I think they did a poor job of explaining exactly what you should be doing... Either that, or I was still so excited about the game that I had the ultimate brain fart.

Seriously though, this shit's nice. It also took me back to a time where I was 12, actually. Shortly after stopping (so I could eat, and not die of hunger), I found myself kinda humming the music that had so nicely gelled itself to my brain... I then realized that I remember doing this same shit right after experiencing OOT for the first time (and quite a few times during my Windwaker runs a while later). I couldn't help but feel kinda happy that Zelda continues to have that same great effect on me. :3
