Rumours are ramping up, so it seems like maybe the time is upon us to start discussing the inevitable successor to the Wii. All unconfirmed information to this point, but here's what we "know":

- High Definition
- Blu-ray
- "More powerful" than PS3/360
- Tri-core custom IBM PowerPC CPU
- GPU from the ATI R700 family
- at least 512Mb of RAM
- another “big surprise” about the console
- to be revealed at E3, for launch in 2012
- controller will have a six-inch HD touchscreen, a front facing camera, directional pad, two bumpers, two triggers (can be used a sensor bar?)
- games can be streamed to the controller?
- all Wii accessories to be compatible
- backwards compatible with Wii and GameCube.
- publishers already have dev-kits

Discuss.

I will laugh my tits off if the controller IS the screen for the games... so it'll be a house-bound portable... man, please let this be true...

Actually, believe it or not, there are rumors going around that this console can create 3D images regardless of whether or not you have a 3DTV.

While that sounds crazy, I've been following the NeoGAF thread about Project Cafe, and there's a lot of things that support this theory.

Nintendo's been fucking around with the idea of 3D games since the NES days, and after the Virtual Boy failure, they began again with the Gamecube. I'm sure you guys have heard the stories about how they had Luigi's Mansion going in 3D. They had it actually working, but the amount of money needed at the time was too great. With this in mind, they kept experimenting by themselves. There are also some stories about how they got the GBASP to display in 3D as well.

On top of all this, remember how Nintendo stated that the DS was sort of 'paving the way' for the Wii? Think about how the 3DS could possibly relate to Nintendo's next home console experience. Suddenly, 3D without glasses without 3DTV's doesn't seem so crazy.

Well, one week from now Nintendo's holding some sort of investors meeting. At the very least, I'm hoping to hear some sort of press release about this thing in the same way that the 3DS was announced last year.

The problem with 3D game consoles without a 3DTV is, unlike a handheld, Nintendo has no control over the display. Sorry, but it doesn't really make any sense.

I think he's saying it would pretty much be like a 3DS, but only with the top screen. Then Nintendo has control over what screen they use, because they're making the whole thing.

...but they already have the 3DS. These rumors are so confusing :S

I might dig through the NeoGAF thread to find the example I was given.
Some dude from Ubisoft France had apparently said something about using the camera along with the screen and 'sensor bar' like component to create an illusion of a hologram.

It's all kind of crazy, but whatever.

Might be an interesting read, but I really can't see how that would work. The best you're getting out of using the controller as a sensor bar is head tracking IMO. But even if you do that, head tracking to show depth won't work in a scenario when you are trying to display different angles to each individual, because a standard TV set isn't capable of that kind of imagery. If tech like that is doable, it's 5-10+ years away from being realized IMO.

I would say Holograms are still pretty far fetched right now too. Especially given cost.

While a hologram is a cool idea, it has some serious issues in terms of usability as well.

- Still no support for adding random people, sending messages, in-game chat, ect.
- WII MUSIC 2!

Discuss.

:D

Srsly though, stoked.

Just something that I think is worth pointing out.
Sonic Generations.

Despite Sonic's success on the Wii, Generations seems to not be on the system.
The only excuse that I found was that the game is in HD.
Cafe Sonic?
I'm actually hoping for some E3 reveal.

And yet 20% of the population still won't be able to see the 3d effect when standard TVs do become capable of creating multiple parallax entities.

3DS top screen just looks flat to me, even when my head's in the right place, so meh.

there would be two good games for the rumoured system/controller.

final fantasy crystal chronicles and legend of zelda four swords adventures.
