February 21st 1986 saw the Japanese release of the original NES "Legend Of Zelda" game, and with it, the creation of one of gamings most famous, recognisable, and lovable icons - the little boy Link. Thats not to say that Zelda is any less worth her weight in rupees, but lets face it, who here hasn't raged at her seemingly magnetic attraction to bad guys over the years?

Now a staple in cartridge-based games, The Legend Of Zelda was the first game in the West to feature a built-in battery to allow gamers to save their progress. And since its launch all those years ago, we have seen only 14 official Legend Of Zelda games not including spinoffs and non-Nintendo developed games (while his teammate Mario scores an impressive 200+ games), with three of them proclaimed to be some of the best games ever made (Links Awakening, Link To The Past and Ocarina Of Time, in release order).

So put down your shield and raise your red potion to the pointy-eared hero Link, and his maiden in distress Zelda - here's to another 25 years... til the release of the next official Zelda game, perhaps?
