I this might be wii storage solution. Seriously. There is news going around that Nintendo's name has shown up as a joint applicant on a patent application by InPhase Technologies for a scanner to read such holographic discs. This might be there way to fix the storage problem on the wii or is it they new format for the the next generation of Nintendo consoles ?
Holographic storage is a technology that I really don't understand well enough to explain. It's a method though of storing data in which data is stored throughout the whole volume of a medium, rather than just the surface, allowing for more storage space on a disc. Basically, storage media with multiple-terabyte capacity.

Yeah right. As if they'd develop an amazing bleeding edge technology that isn't even experimental yet, when the hardware in their console is the pinnacle of 1995.

Love your new avatar btw =)

Of course they are, what else would their hardware teams be doing?

Mind you that holographic storage discs mean any size from 300GB - 1TB.

If Nintendo's really making their bet on this, they're really doing it hardcore.

The only way that would be useful is if the rest of the hardware was jacked up beyond belief in the way that PS3 and Xbox 360 have tried to do- which would mean Nintendo is joining them in the fight for the HD market.

Highly ridiculous.

lol jk.
This seems to be interesting. I hope Nintendo thinks for a while about this. It could mean amazing things for them.
