REJOICE! IT WILL BE OVER IN 2014!

Of course this provides a problem: What happens to the games that use it?
Well we're already hearing word of games like Dark Souls that are getting patches to be integrated into Steam.
Unfortunately, that still leaves a shaky future for older games, such as Red Faction: Guerrilla, which require GFWL to get onto multiplayer.

How hype are you guys?

I don't really dig GFWL. It's just been a pain in my arse. Especially when like, I'm playing my PC, and then my housemate turns on the 360 which autologs me in, and then my PC signs me out without saving my shit.

Eff that.

I mean the sales of the games I'm happy with and I don't mind MS publishing their own stuff, but not the overlay. No.

You're an idiot. GFWL being gone is not a good thing.

Because it generally got in the way, more than it really did anything.
Most games that are released on PC have already chosen to roll with Steam, Origin, UPlay, or any other service that acts as a DRM.
Having Games for Windows Live pushed on top of it was nothing but an inconvenience when you want to just boot up the game and play.

On the flipside, I did like how it allowed you to use your gamertag for PC games, and get achievements and such, but I'd much rather have it gone, to be completely honest.
I know I'm not the only one who holds this opinion... What's your take on it though?

Reason why GFWL is chosen for games? Easier ports. Dark Souls only got on PC thanks to GFWL. It's easier for devs to quickly copy the netcode over from the 360 version and emulate it on GFWL then it is to be rebuilt from the ground up for Steam etc. One hand that means ports now require more effort, on the other hand devs may just refuse to port over games now because they can't be fucked with the whole netcode part of it.

Obviously on the consumer side GFWL was a huge bag of dicks, but if you want games like GTA IV, Dark Souls etc to be on PC then GFWL was the reason why. Of course, that is because both ports were lazily handled, I'd rather an optimized port with it's own original net code built to be used over Steam or Origin, but I'd still want the games on PC, no matter how bad the port.

Also, Dark Souls may be in the process of patching to get around the lack of GFWL, but what about the other list of games I still want to play in the future?

^I know that there's fan-patches for Fallout 3 that'll remove the need to log in through GFWL, so I can't imagine it would be incredibly difficult for people to get around it. Also, you can play single-player with offline mode. On top of that, it's not exclusively Dark Souls, I hear Bioshock 2's on that list as well, so I'd imagine there's more than just 2 games being fixed. Though all of that stuff definitely isn't the most reassuring information.

I get what you mean though, the ports for those games were pretty iffy, but I definitely wouldn't have gotten Dark Souls if it weren't for that.
As for future games, that's a very good point. I'm not about to say 'just get a console arrr', because that kind of argument is pretty ridiculous all around.
I'm not entirely sure just how many ports this rules out, if any, but I guess we'll wait and see.

Fallout is irrelevant though, it has no online capabilities. As for Bioshock 2, who fucking plays that garbage, let alone the MP.
