I need you fellows to clear something up for me. Even though Ben told me yesterday and I could probably google this in minutes to get this cleared up for myself I am too lazy and rather have you gents enjoy this post.

SO! We all know with the Xbox one you can use it to watch TV. Ben told me yesterday that to watch TV on the Xbox one you still need to have your cable box. You just plug your cable box into the Xbox to use it for TV. Now, I thought the Xbox one worked just like a cable box and I am able to just plug my cable wire up to the system and use it for TV just like you would a cable box.

I googled it as I am typing this post out and got my answer from Microsoft on a help page and that got me thinking. Why didn't they just i make it so you can just use the xbox one as a cable box without having to use your cable providers cable box? Do you guys think the next xbox will have it so you can ditch the cable box and just have that as your main cable box?

Because you still need to have a cable provider.

Otherwise, you'd have people thinking that they didn't need a cable provider when buying an Xbone, which would be hilariously bad.

Other option? MS to become a cable provider, which would entail all manner of extra costs for MS, including hooking people up, running cable accounts, whole new departments.

It's like asking "If Shell sell petrol, why not make and sell cars with petrol in them?".

No idea how TV works over that side of the pond but I've got one of these and it's pretty good.

Not sure if they get freeview-type stuff over there, but that thing is pretty cool.

Oh okay. Well, couldn't the cable providers just release a cable box addon for the xbox?

Yes and no.

There's a fair whack of stuff in some cable boxes. Sky, who are pretty solid I. the UK, have a hefty box, but it comes with HDDs to record things as well (live TV etc). That's a lot to put into a console.

Sky actually had an app for the 360 where you could pay a subscription and stream Sky through the network, but I'm not sure if that's still apparent or even on the Xbone.

You can get an extension here in the UK which does what Joey's suggesting but only for Freeview (UK's free channels). It's something you plug into the xbone, costs thirty quid or something...
