So I guess by now, most of you will have heard the rumours that the new Xbox will require a permanent internet connection to be able to, well, do anything. Some will be all "whatevs", some will be all "well thats gash". Some may even be all for it.

However, the creative director at Microsoft has a few words for the doubters, and... well... he comes across as a bit of a dick about it all.

Now, I'm all for the prevention of piracy when it comes to games, especially in a time where studios are shutting down left, right and centre, but surely there are better ways than always-online?

Isn't that right, SimCity and Diablo 3?

Thoughts?

Also, Francis.

I don't like it, but I have to go along with it.

Points for whoever gets that reference.

Didn't get it right away, til I HERE BE SECRETSGoogled it, then I remembered and laughed.

I'm interested in what Prof thinks of this always online thing, as he's a big Xbox fan, and showed a hell of a lot of interest in the PS4 when it was announced... will this be enough for him to jump ship?

No, fucking, seriously though, right. I'm not fucking industry expert, but it doesn't take one to come to the conclusion that, if this is true, and if this goes ahead, it will be the end for Xbox. Fucking seriously.

Yes, going forward this is what people will be doing anyway but not yet. The world isn't ready for this direction yet.

I have my eye on Playstation, looks like it's gonna remain that way.

I see absolutely no reason for this to be a negative aspect unless you (a) Don't have internet (b) Pirate every game you want (c) Live an Amish lifestyle and have no money to pay for electricity

And while I'm ranting,

Many moons ago I schemed up an idea that would put microsoft in good standing with everyone. No mobile Hotspot? No wifi? No wired internet at all? Download our free xbox live wired tethering app! Just plug you phone into your xbox and boom! XBAWKSLIVE

I'm still getting it assuming it has games I want to play, and I'll do the same if the PS4 has an "always online" plan. You guys can't avoid it, all consoles will hit that path eventually.

And on that basis, should your internet get cut off, or the servers at MS go down (like their first Christmas, perhaps), and you are left with a console that you can't even play single player games on (the always on connection is reportedly required for the console to even operate, not just authenticate games), you'd be cool with that?

I remember being incredibly annoyed and incensed when PSN went down for a month, and I could still play everything/anything that I had on disc and on the machine itself. I just couldn't go online with it, and that alone pissed me right off.

I agree with what Ax said - its going to happen eventually, but the world is not equipped well enough for it to be implemented in this manner. Its like selling electrical items to aid with food growth and preparation to people in Etheopia, despite them having no electricity...

well what if Microsoft's servers go down? What if something similar to the PSN outage occurs?

you've done nothing wrong, your internet still works and all that but you can't play your console. In the case of the PSN outage, it was gone for fucking ages, not just a couple of hours.

also fairly sure Sony said that an 'always online' plan isn't part of the PS4's feature set, might not be able to avoid it in the future but I can sure as hell avoid it this generation.

My router cuts out every now and then and I have to reboot it. Fortunately I am able to quickly rejoin games if my friends are still playing but if I'm playing a single player game, and it doesn't save or something? What if I'm moving house? What if my ISP is down or like Blokeh said, Xbox servers shit themselves. That shit would happen too much to be enjoyable.

And phone tethering should not be allowed for gaming, as it's not fast enough and half the people would be too fucking laggy to play with (getting flashbacks of Carl sending abusive messages to lagging opponents after playing Street Fighter X Tekken). It would ruin the experience for everyone else. We pay for XBL for a silky smooth experience.

Who would you play online with on your NextBox if all your friends are on Playstations? Cause that's how this is gonna pan out, realistically.

I actually liked Prof's idea of tethering, but it would solely have to be for authenticating, not online play, as 3G just wouldn't cut it. Its like with Steam - if you have no 'net and you wanna play something on Steam, you're gonna be either shit out of luck, gonna need another connection, or find some way of temporarily connecting so you can enable "Offline Mode".

While almost all smartphones allow you to turn it into a wifi hotspot using the 3G connection, you're going to need a wireless laptop/computer/console to be able to connect to it. In fact, strange this should be mentioned - theres a problem with Virgin Media at the moment where downloading patches freezes your machine, or anything downloaded is corrupted (see my post on it right here - it would appear I was also the one who made the distinction between "regular modem = patches fail" and "superhubs = corrupted downloads" as you can see in my second post in that thread - originally there was just one large thread. Go me!).

Anyways, I couldn't download a 12meg patch for Tomb Raider Trilogy, so I set my phone up as a wireless hotspot using its 3G connection, connected to it using the PS3 wireless connection, and downloaded it first time.

If MS do indeed go always online, they're going to need to implement something like this for at least authentication, but even then, that would only work if your internet goes down. If MS's servers go down, you're fucked.

Holy shit, he was a fantastic sport. Laggy as hell (but I forgot I had torrents on...) and we called each other all sorts of names before we realised we were actually "alright" and had a laugh about it.

Yeah what a day. Miss you mang

Also, you don't need to be online to authenticate for Steam. I've never had an issue with playing anything without a connection, not once. But yeah, tethering to authenticate is boshank.

We are a long way away before we're able to get stable internet coverage on a consistent basis in large areas. Acting like "always online" is the right thing right now is ridiculous. Not all devices are always online; hell, if I can be getting full 3G coverage in one spot, then take two steps and have no bars whatsoever, we are no where near ready for this.

Does it have games I want to play?

If yes: I don't care.

If no: Whatever.

Pretty much my only rule when buying any gaming system.
