So, got Forza Horizon from my dad for xmas. Bummer I couldn't've got it sooner, but it's here!

I'm digging it so far. It's basically the "Burnout Paradise" of the Forza world.

Of course that means that they're pretty different, in that Burnout is about insanity and destruction, whereas Forza is far more about the racing (and in Horizon's case, looking like a boss while doing so).

Played for about 2 hours, have the Green Wristband and beat the first Star challenge. I'm so happy that they kept the painting and everything in the game. The paintjobs and vinyl groups people design and put up on the storefront can be absolutely jaw-dropping. It wouldn't have been Forza without it.

The racing is definitely more arcade-ish than Forza 3 or 4, of course, but it still FEELS like a Forza game, which I think is pretty impressive considering the design of the game. Mebbe some of you guys would like to hop online at some point? Don't expect much from me, because one of the genres of game that my eye disease has affected most is racing games. Sometimes I can't properly see other cars, and if there's a sharp turn, I'm absolutely fucked.

Loving this so far! Can't stop playing. It's honestly the most fun I've had with a racing game since Burnout Paradise.

Be sure to try and beat some of my speed camera records too

I adore the photo mode, got some pictures I can put up if anybody is interested?

I say put 'em up. I've been taking some with Gran Turismo 5, so lets get some comparisons going.

Never really been into Forza before, but I know they're pretty much the Xbox answer to the GT series, and they don't skimp on the quality.

I'll have to take a picture of my the Radical Edward Horizon livery I bought for the Subaru WRX '11.

I remember taking a Forza Big Shot in 4. Those saved pics are over 30MB!

Yeah Blokey, Forza's definitely the XBOX answer to GT. I think Forza tends to be a bit more friendly, in that it lets you alter a lot of difficulty/assist options, so you don't always have to play it sim-style. Granted, I haven't tried GT5, so I dunno how it's all set-up in that game.

New thread started!

Also, GT5 has both sim mode and arcade mode, not to mention B-spec, which is basically you = pit manager. Currently grinding an 18-lap race while I type this.

I have never understood why others think these games are fun.

For me, I love taking some shitty little second hand Vauxhall Nova and building the bugger out til it pisses all over a Dodge Viper (or similar) and nets me glorious digital money and shiny digital trophies.

I could see your point if this were about GT5 or FM4. Racing sims aren't for everyone, for sure.

This being an open-world racing/car culture festival has a much different vibe. There's a sense of freedom to it where you think, "Hey, I wonder if I can pull off a perfect drift through that turn at 85MPH while dodging traffic" that's just plain fun.

The same sort of thing could be said for any type of game really. "How do people find JRPGs fun? You're just making menu selections and wandering around for 50 hours."

Rather than "Oh, it's a driving game." or "Oh, it's an androgynous protagonist fantasy simulator." it's about the experience for each person, y'know?

The same way that not all JRPGs are equal in the way they play and feel applies to driving games just as much. There's a big difference between Cruis'n USA and Gran Turismo, and there's a big difference between Forza 4 and Forza Horizon. Kinda how there's a big difference between Final Fantasy XIII, Tales of Vesperia, Disgaea 4, and Persona 4. They all have their own vibe and quirks.

Yeah I'm not a racing sim person. The only types I like are Mario Kart esque racers

He's talking realistic racing games in general, you plum.

Its sounding like Forza Horizon takes the freedom of Burnout Paradise (which is one of the best games of all time ever) and the technical stuff from Forza 1-4/Gran Turismo 1-5 (the best racing sims of all time ever), which can only deliver an incredibly satisfying experience.

But again, if you ain't into driving, then its likely not for you.

EDIT: goddammit, he beat me to it.

It's still a valid comparison.

"How do people have fun with realistic games?" is just as valid a question as "How do people have fun with unrealistic games?"

Depends on the person and the way the game rubs them.

I hate Mario Kart outside of Battle Mode. With a passion. The shitty rubber-band racing mechanic that declares that your racing skill has such little bearing on the outcome of the race drives me crazy. It's why I think All-Stars Racing is a better series, since you can turn that shit off and play the game still with all the power-ups and silly fun nonsense, but your racing skill actually matters in the end.

I don't understand how people can have fun with "Football Manager 20XX" when there's a game like FIFA or PES where you actually, y'know, play the game, but I know there's someone out there who can tell me why they enjoy it.

Because sometimes you can't be fucked to actually play the game, you just want to lead your small, hometown club to European glory without all that fuss.

Although most people just play both.

Played a lot more yesterday. Got my Blue Wristband, and the game really opened up in terms of what type of races I'm allowed to do.

Note to self: Do NOT attempt another race in an A-Class Dodge Charger '12. The handling is terrible. Use Toyota Supra instead.

Note to self: Do NOT attempt another dirt/mixed terrain race in an A-Class Toyota Supra. It's not meant for that shit. Use Audi Quattro instead.

Note to Self: DO see if you can get going 150 MPH and see if you can hit something just right to launch yourself into an aileron roll (that shit isn't called a barrel roll, son) and land it with speed maintained. Maybe at some area in the game world it'll be possible. Keep trying.
