Firmware update stops 360 reading discs, MS already on it

Now this is how to sort out your mess-ups...

A new firmware update for Xbox 360 is being phased in to program the disc drive in your 360 to allow it to use the new discs that will soon be hitting shelves - you know, the ones that allow an extra gig of storage space to be used?

Well, the firmware apparently stops the machine from reading some game discs AT ALL... but thats not the important thing here...

Apparently, some models have disc drives that, even with the firmware, wouldn't be able to read these new discs, and even though they haven't even started using them yet, MS have already been able to identify the machines that will be affected using XBL, and have already emailed at least one user to notify them of this... and have offered them a new Xbox 360 and a years supply of XBL!

Considering the last month has been a bad one for Sony, MS are being incredibly pro-actve here, and have effectively nipped in the bud a problem that hasn't even surfaced yet!

The only other details present is that the one person confirmed as being contacted with this information has an older 2009 model. Considering the one sat on our TV unit was bought 2008, I'm kinda hoping a new slim model with a years free XBLA will be winging its way over to us...

So if you have an older model, check your emails regularly!

It's not exactly fair to compare this with the PSN outage. Sony got jacked up by people on the outside. MS did this to themselves (again).

Wasn't comparing it. Was just saying that, this last month, MS have probably done enough to gain a fair chunk of PS3 market.

Online servers, free XBL weekends, this offer (when they could have just replaced disc drives)...

A lot of good publicity for MS here.

Yeah, getting pissed with Sony Vs MS shit recently too. Finding a lot of it on Kotaku recently, thinking of changing where I read my news.

This is why Microsoft actually beta tests firmware upgrades on a real userbase sample rather than forcing it on everyone at once.

If something fucks shit up, they know what they'll have to do.

Oh god, this is one of the few times where I wish my Xbox gets fucked up.

I got the 60gb 360 from 2008 or 2009.
