...is pretty good. It captures the GT gameplay feel, but not the fanatical devotion of GT4. But I think expecting that might be too much.

What it is, is alot closer to is GTHD, the demo Polyphony had during the PS3 launch. One track, 10 cars, two variations of each. With so few cars and one track, the intensity of racing comes out. You slice curves, upping the speed, trying new lines, iterating. It's just like learning to drive a real car; practice, practice, practice.

The "real" GTs always lost this feeling because you could always supe up your car to the limit to blow away other drivers, and everyone did it. GTHD had no opponent other than the clock; yourself. With no modifications allowed, GTHD was a true driving simulator.

GTPSP is like this, although much bigger in scale. It has alot of cars, and alot of tracks - but progress is measured in your progress per track. This is a brilliant move, even if it does have the fat of 800 cars. Not being able to modify your car, you have to get better. The driving challenges, optional this time around, have time differences between the medals (so far anyways; I've only done the A, B and C rank challenges) that are just tantilizing enough to push you to go for gold. I'm actually trying for golds now: I got all golds in A and B. Because the entire game is designed around progression, it doesn't feel painful like it does in GT4, which had such a chasm between skill progression (license testing) and game progression (actual racing).

GTPSP, so far, is Polyphony being game designers, rather than software developers. Somehow, through all the extraneous games and endless dawdling, they found their gaming mojo.
